Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

An increased entry with a good range of weights and quality found strong competition from purchasers with 19 of the entry making 250p plus. Messrs. F&B Smith of Westhouse produced 2 high flying heifers, a Limousin cross weighing 540kg and a British Blue cross at 530kg which both sold to DA Gregory of Bacup for 280.5p/kg and 279.5p/kg or £1515 and £1481. A lightweight steer weighing 535kg from James Middleton of Arncliffe led the male cattle making 272.5p/kg or £1457 when selling to Keelham Farm Shop, Skipton. With more heavy cattle coming forward the leading gross was a 720kg Limousin cross steer from Bill Cowperthwaite of Malham Moor which sold for 239.5p/kg or £1696 to Mick Etherington with the same buyer accounting for another 630kg Limousin heifer from GW Houseman & Partners for £1610 or 255.5p/kg. The steer average was a shade easier on the week at 252p/kg and heifers were 257p/kg with the change in both sections down to an increased number of commercial cattle which themselves were a tremendous trade. More cattle are needed to ensure that those attending are supplied.

4,378 Prime Sheep comprising 3719 Prime Lambs, & 659 Cast Ewes & Rams

A much increased entry, and a more mixed show of sheep this week forward for sale at Skipton, the headline numbers show an identical average, but with more hill bred lambs in the entry, the truth is they were in reality a shade dearer on the week.

Heavy Lambs were in sharp demand all day, 216p being the average per kilo for 46kg to 52kg lambs, which included several large pens of Mule wethers which if 44kg to 48kg were in strong demand generally around the 200p mark, including a pen of 22 Mules weighing 48kg from Samantha Fawcett Barden selling at £96.
A butchers/farmshop type of lamb in the heavy weight bracket could command £120-£135 regular away, with top price on the day being a 46kg from Tom Walmsley Haverah Park weighing 46kg and making £150 to SA Swales, York. Ellis Bros had 47kg Continentals at £145 and Jim Scrivin Elslack 47kg Continentals at £143 all to Vivers Scotlamb. RJ Capstick from Clitheroe and N Boynton Ripon both made £137 of 46kg Continentals, the former to SA Swales and the latter to Vivers Scotlamb. Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton secured lambs at 49kg  £135 from WC Logan of Malham Moor, and 51kg lambs at £134.50 from Paul Drinkall of Gargrave.

A commercial heavy lamb was a shade better to sell this week, aided by the presence of an additional buyer at the ringside looking for lowland and good hill bred lambs 46kg to 56kg.
Commercial handyweight lambs 205/215p today, next grade 220p/230p, and the ¾ sorts from 235p upwards, a dozen pens at £3 per kilo or more, whilst the main of  better Beltex sorts in the usual 250/300p bracket.

Hill bred lambs as stated had better Mules either side of £2/kilo, whilst horned lambs were a good trade, topping at 215p, and Swales in good demand 170/180p for the better sorts.

With the Ewe trade looking to have slipped later last week most goods today sold very well. Best end Suffolk Ewes up-to £139.50. Best end of the Texel ewes sold to £130.50 from MR&GP Beresford followed behind at £127.50 from the same vendor for a real run of good heavy crossed ewes White faced ewes sold to an avg of £87. Mules sold to £103.50 with the best end heavies £85+ leaner mules £64-£76 for a total breed avg of £69. Cheviots sold to £100.50. Swales look less on the week with an avg of £30 and top price of £61.50 from KM&L Throup. The best swales wouldn’t be any less, maybe a touch better trade, but the plain sorts are making their way in now and making less money.
