A slightly smaller show of sheep today, and a more varied selection as well. Smart sorts were stand on from last week, Hayley Baines showing lambs for Messrs Saffrey was top of the pops at £116 per head or 294.9p. In addition, Kevin Marshall, Martin Brown, Jimmy Towler, Paul Simpson, Charlie Clarke and Ben Simpson from Hope Valley all topping £110 per head or 280p/kg for Continental lambs. Nice prime sorts were either side of £2, whilst a commercial type was 180p-185p. Lowland Heavies were a varied trade, good sorts 190p-210p, commercials 170-180p. Mule lambs maintained recent trade of £30-£35 over the weight, whilst fed horned lambs getting into season, nice prime weight  170p plus, nice lightweights either side of 160p.

A handy show of calves for a non - dairy day with all sections hard fought over. The better end of the black whites were a strong trade with an odd bobby calf bringing the average back but healthy calves today were well into the £80’s and past £100 with Stephen Marshall of West End taking the top price at £135.

Watson’s of Horton pasture topped the natives with and MRI bred Hereford bull reaching £330 for a 26 day old calf. With Robert Metcalfe of Brearton receiving a strong trade for 5 Limousin Bull calves 40 – 50 days old averaging £345 with the days joint top price being to British Blue Bulls from Martyn Jennings and Paul & Janet Bolland at £370.

NB: Strong show expected next week with two seperate runs of 10 – 15 Angus and Continentals plus other healthy entries.
