SPRING LAMBS
Another sharp increase in spring lambs numbers (654 head) met with a packed ringside of 18 separate individuals all bidding for lambs with the sale averaging a whopping 257p/kg. The best types were either side of £3, with John Critchley of Hutton, Preston having top price of £138 per head or 336p/kg for 41kg selling to Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster. Richard & Jonathan Frankland of Rathmell had a great run of lambs, the best of which were £129 or 330.8p/kg for 39kg selling to Vivers Scotlamb. The same purchaser paid £121 or 310p for 39kg lambs from Richard Ogg of Scunthorpe, whilst Tom Walmsley of Haverah Park made £115 or 302p/kg for 38kg selling to Woodends Butchers in Adel, Leeds. Messrs Clarke of Hampsthwaite made £127 or 203p/kg for 42kg and Kevin Marshall of Darley £111 or 300p for 37kg, both pens selling to Hartshead Meat Company of Mossley.

An absolutely unbelievable trade today! Numbers were much increased with 1,862 Hoggs (inc those with teeth up) and the overall average stands at 221.4p/kg or £102.99, with the 46kg to 52kg weight range levelling at 231.9p/kg or £112.13 per head. Some great runs of sheep today from all over the country, top gross price of £124 was achieved twice, first from Jeff Burrow for Beltex crosses, and then from Banks Farms, Worksop who sold a second pen at £122. In the sale was a run of 451 head from D Harriot, West Sussex topping at £121 per head or 257p for a pen of 18 Texel crosses weighing 47kg. Similar pens from the same home 45kg to 50kg selling for £115 to £120. Top price of the day at 268.6p/kg was achieved for a pen of smart Beltex from Charlie Clarke of Cowling, whilst Chris Sargent, East Sussex had 266.6p or £112 for 42kg Continentals closely followed by £108 or 263p for 41kg from Kevin Marshall of Darley and £110 or 260p for 42kg from G Curtis, Buckingham.

619 BREEDING SHEEP
An increased entry of 241 sheep with 378 lambs at foot for the weekly attracted another large company of buyers to the ringside. Older sheep with strong lambs were again in high demand and would look dearer in comparison than the younger sheep with lambs at foot. Richard Caton had top price of the day with some correct Suffolk x Ewes with Twins at £195 the outfit.

A good number of calves today and an EXCEPTIONAL TRADE!!!!!!. Black and White Bulls averaged £147.13 (av 39 days old) to £290 for a belter from Michael Heron of Bramhope. Continentals had a flyer too with Heifer buyers out in force, Fred Houseman of Church Farm Enterprises to £450 and a BB Heifer average of £392. Bulls not quite as potent but with Shaun Sowray topping at £405 and an average of £405 for all Blue Bulls, the limousins weren’t much different again with heifers outstripping their male counterparts with Bulls averaging £362.50 to £400 G Pickergill & Sons, Hawksworth but Heifers av £376 to £400 PJ&JE Bolland, Airton.
Natives should not be missed out either with young 3-4 week old Angus heifers from Michael Heron to £290 and Gavin Herd from Hebden at £310 for his handy bull. Stirks from Graham Hayton sold well with his 4 month old Lim Bull and Heifer at £480 and £470 respectively.

Craven Dairy Auction (14 head)
Brian Moorhouse saw his home bred pedigree heifer take the championship this morning awarded by pre- sale judge Colin Whitelock. The heifer giving 28kg and calved a fortnight sold for £1750 to Shaun Sowray of A Sowray & Son, Bishop Thornton.
Top price however went to a Peter Baul bred Heifer from Samantha Sugden of Laycock which only ten days calved was hard fought over and sold to the Sowray family again for the sale high of £1820. David and Pauline Brown of Ramsgill saw the last of their Brown Swiss go under the hammer as Incalf Heifers to the Lincoln Red and realising either side of £1000 for all three.
Maidens from Pollards peaked at £650 and av £625 with all selling to Duncan Holme, Bolton Abbey.
