A very good trade selling to the retail trade needing plentiful supplies hanging to keep counters full over the next few weeks. James Robertshaw for his Robertshaws Farm Shop in Thornton secured the days top gross at £1556 a 655kg Limousin cross heifer from Bill Cowperthwaite of Malham Moor. Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster was the form buyer securing 6 entries including the top gross steer at £1509, a 630kg British Blue cross from Charles and Richard Kitching of Threshfield. The sale had 7 clean cattle buyers at the ringside with signed in entry and strict vendor access but most of the entry was delivered and left to sell a policy which it is our intention to continue with.

A seed of uncertainty planted yesterday with the announcement that McDonalds will close its stores temporarily which was bound to impact on cast cow trade. Buyers who attended pragmatic enough to realise that the market will readjust to this in time and Mc Donalds customers haven’t stopped eating overnight! A few beef crosses helped the overall average and the heavy dairies were around the 100p mark with prices for the dairies 10-15p/kg back on the week.

Prime Sheep
Well you wouldn’t think 2 weeks could be so different, but with the country now coming into the grip of Corona Virus, several major export and home market processors closed the door or significantly reduced their requirement for sheep only this morning and so cancelled orders with buyers. The result was a very mid table 189.7p/kg overall average with some Northern markets achieving higher averages in the morning but some other reporting lower. Several vendors chose to take sheep home and hope the storm blows over.
Those that did sell away found the smarter end 250 plus, up to 318p for Beltex from Walter & Rob Parkinson of Garstang. Handier weight nice lambs could make 220p to 240p and a commercial handy weight was 180p to 215p. Several pens of butchers style sheep 50kg plus at £110 to £115, but a commercial heavy lamb was 170p to 195p. We will wait to see how government policy changes this next week and what effect it has on marketing. Please do not hesitate to contact an auctioneer at any point if you want to discuss selling at any of our sales. We are on hand to advise. Thankyou.
