MARKET REPORT - MONDAY 24TH JULY 2017

Forward: 70 Prime cattle comprising 21 Clean Cattle (under 30 mos), 3 Clean Cattle (over 30 mos) & 46 Cast Cattle. 3,106 Prime Sheep comprising 2673 Prime Lambs & 433 Cast Ewes & Rams. 52 Rearing Calves. 29 Dairy Cattle. 1 Loads of produce.





Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A good show of clean cattle and feeding cows today. Country Style Meats from Lancaster purchased the top priced beast per kilo consigned by Messrs AA&E Critchley & Sons from Hutton, Preston at 258.5p/kg. Country Style purchased 4 overall, including the 3rd highest priced from Charles & Richard Kitching of Threshfield at 246.5p. Keelham Farmshop purchased the second highest per kilo at 254.5p off Messrs Critchley, and the top priced overall per head at £1355 from Simon Bennett of Silsden, Keelham purchased 10 cattle overall. Stanforths butchers had the second highest per head, at £1353, a steer from Charles & Richard Kitching.
In the feeding cows there were some nice beef types from mid 140’s to mid 150’s, adding up to a top of £1275 for an Angus from G&MA Lawn, Skipton, and a cast bull at £1460 from JC Marshall, Dacre. The best of the black & Whites were making away up into the 130’s with second quality sorts 110p to 125p. There was an overall selling average of 123.9p/kg for the 49 head of feeding cattle and 234.1p/kg for the 21 clean cattle.

3,106 Prime Sheep

Prime lamb trade eased a bit today to under 200p, recording an overall sale average of 195.5p/kg. Mick Collinson of Clayton le Dale topped the sale at £108 each when selling to Keelham Farm shop. D Harrison of Skipton had lambs to £107 purchased by Swaledale Foods, and Henry Atkinson presented a good run of Beltex crosses, the best of which sold to £107, £106 and £105. Richard Crabtree of Clifton aklso had lambs to £105, and NG Bailey & Co, Denton Park Est sold lambs to £104, as did AJ Greensit of Azerley, Ripon. Henry Atkinsons run of lambs topped at 281.6p/kg, others at 271p 269p and 263p. Mick Collinson and Richard Crabtree both had lambs at 234p/kg. Ewes were a sharp trade, and more could have easily been sold today.

Rearing Calves to £440 (52)

Native calves on fire today with the best calf hitting £385 for a month old bull from Michael Heron of Bramhope with another of his entries hitting £350. Black and whites may look cheaper on the week but a lot of calves today from 14- 21 days old making £75 - £95 with a month old Friesian from Michael Heron again making £170.

 

A cracking suckler bred calf from Paul Leadbeater got snapped up for £440 with Paul and Janet Bolland of Dykelands seeing their strong blue bull hit £410.

 

Calves overall were a lot younger today on average which resulted in an easier average on paper however for what was on offer trade was certainly strong.

Craven Dairy Auction (29 head)

Milkers into an extra gear today with a top price of £2200 for a heifer from Tony Swires of Stainburn who also saw his consignment of four average £2020. KT Wood & Son, Holcombe found their reserve champion heifer first in the ring but nobody held watching it reach £2100 selling to regular supporter Brian Blezard of Ribchester.

 

Shaun Sowray judged the pre sale show which saw him choose a 28 litre, 14 day calved heifer from Tony Swires of Stainburn and stuck to his guns and bought her for £1950.  A second calved cow from Fort’s of Glusburn reached £1680 also selling to the judge.

 

Incalf heifers were a flyer too with the Roberts family of South Crosland having the pick of the trade with £1420 the top call for their enrty which was incalf to the Aberdeen Angus and due end of August with Incalf heifers averaging £1237 overall.
