5,026 Prime Sheep

Today was the fourth consecutive week that there were over 5,000 sheep penned for sale, however todays average may show a  slight rise on the week but trade was rather mixed, with Lowland lambs generally a bit cheaper, Mule lambs very similar and Horned lambs dearer.

The Lowland lambs didn’t keep up last weeks rates, with handy weighted commercial types generally £2-£3 apiece down. Quality types, regardless of weight, did manage to stay closer to last weeks trade, and some excellent runs of ¾ Bred Texel and Beltex’s were a very good trade, highlighted by the leading Beltex prices where James & Simon Garth of Keasden lead the way selling lambs to £116 each or 305.5p/kg. The rest of these prices also show the strength of the trade at Skipton for these types.

Heavy Lambs again were a fair trade, nice sorts holding last weeks trade but commercial types being a little cheaper.

The Hill lambs saw Mules maintain last weeks prices with the average up 2p/kg on the week to 164.9p, however it was the Horned lambs that performed best on the week with the average up 18p/kg to stand at 164p/kg for Swaledales and 167p for Dalebreds.

Craven Dairy Auction Christmas Show (42 head)

A busy day with the Christmas Dairy Sale and by far one of the best shows of cattle this year with quality right through the shippon.  Trade was slow and steady and not helped by further doom and gloom in the industry, but the sale got underway with a certain hype and enthusiasm. Trade did get going through the middle of the sale with the arrival of the champion from David Lawson which was 21 days calved and giving 32 Litres, the heifer eventually reached £2500 and was knocked down to regular supporter Stephen Jeanes and his Son Edward.

All in all there was a straight trade for most animals considering the circumstances with the show of cattle probably not reaching their deserved value. Next Sale 15th December, let’s hope things look a little better by then.
