Prime Lambs were a good trade on the day, anything well fleshed was well bid for with 41kg to 44kg nice sorts generally 190p to 200p, and the smart Beltex types at more. More lighter weights about than usual (36kg-38kg) and generally they are short of meat compared to the heavier goods and making 5p-10p/kg less, this was the same for all breeds. The 46kg to 52kg weight range lambs were also a solid trade, averaging virtually the same as the 36kg to 45kg lambs.
We also held the Annual Show & Sale of Lambs from Young Farmers and Young Handlers. This is always a warmly received competition and is aimed at the future farmers experiencing showing livestock in an auction market and then presenting the lamb for sale in the ring. Overall Champion was 3 year old Kieran Robinson from Barnoldswick, son of Scott and Laura Robinson. His Beltex cross lamb was well presented and Kieran was smart himself in a shirt, tie and white coat. The champion lamb later made £135 or 329.3p when purchased by Nick Dalby purchasing on behalf of Keelham Farmshop in Thornton and Bradford. Reserve champion was Jonathan Frankland from Rathmell. A healthy number forward today with the goods on offer well fought over today. Again friesian’s and Black and Whites were good to sell with plenty of cover for all types and headed to an average of £110.68 for an average of 29.5 days of age.
Quality was a bit down on previous weeks in the continental section an steadied the average to £332 for all goods despite Geoff and Margaret Booth of Lothersdale topping at £430 and Fred Houseman not far behind at £425. Fred Houseman topped the heifers however at a high of £400 and £395. Limousin’s were out in stronger numbers than late with Shaun Sowray and Robert Metcalfe topping the report sheets.

Almost a shippon full for the dairy sale this morning with the added attraction of the 5 well bred pedigree heifers. Despite continued optimism of the increasing milk price with the reality of it hitting the bank accounts looking more and more like being the back end rather than late summer. With a slight dampener on enthusiasm ringside trade was not quite as brisk as last time out but developed into a healthy average.
Louise Wood of Broadwood Edge took both Champion and Reserve with her consignments to the ring and sold to a high of £1600 and £1480. Tony and Son James sold a strong homebred heifer for a sale price of £1650 with Keith Downs seeing a high of £1580 selling to Ken and Lynne Throup, Woofa Bank.
The pedigree maiden heifer drew some strong interest despite only five in the catalogue. Peter Baul of Bishop Thornton won the pre sale show with his heifer Ravensgate Ransom Hilda, a Ravensgate Garrison Hilda Daughter by Chalclyffe Ransom and Sold for £900 to Simon Spensley of Gargrave. The second highest price of the day came from the 13mth old Holmedale Cruise Poppy, Daughter of Holmedale Hercules Poppy VG85 and with healthy back pedigree sold for £880 to Abbott Brothers of Dacre.
