1,287 Prime Sheep comprising 886 Spring Lambs, 171 Prime Hoggs (inc 13 Mature Hoggs), 230 Cast Ewes & Rams
Bank Holiday saw us hold our usual weekly market for Primestock, Breeding Sheep, Calves and Dairy, and whilst Spring Lamb numbers were again good and a nice trade seen for nearly 900 head of lambs which levelled at £106.23 per head, or 255p/kg, hoggs and ewes saw much lighter entries following the end of Ramadan.
Spring Lambs saw two vendors achieve the top price of 300p/kg, first to PA&NS Tattersall from York with 6 Continentals weighing 38kg selling at £114 per head, and secondly from D&L Coar from Darwen, with a pair of 42kg Continentals making £126. Both pens sold to wholesalers Hartshead Head Meat Co in Mossley. Next in line were AS&G Donaldson from Northallerton with Continentals at 282.1p, GT Booth from Dowshaw Farm in Lothersdale made 280p. The handy export weight lambs were again a sharp trade, better skinned sorts 260p to 280p, first cross Suffolk & Texels generally around 250p.
Per head, the prices peaked at £127 on three occasions, two of those from ML Evans of Steeton, one pen selling to butchers J Kearns in Shipley, and the other to Kendalls Farm Butchers in Harrogate & Pateley Bridge. The third pen at £127 came from TH Mellin of Black Lane Ends which sold to Hartshead Meat Co who also secured lambs at £126 from D&L Coar of Darwen. Messrs Coar sold another pen at £126 to Kendalls Farm Butchers, and a further pen at £125 to West Scottish Lamb. The nice heavy lambs on the day for quality retail use were generally making prices £118 to mid £120’s, commercial heavies £112 to £117.
There was a poor show of Hoggs on offer today showing them less money on the week but still proving a demand is still out there for them, with fed Hoggs selling above all expectations! 45-52 kilos averaged 201ppk with a mixture of Mules, Horned and Continentals in the mix! Best Hoggs still selling to local butchers shops with a top of £124 from J Greenwood. Hoggs looking like they want cashing before the trade drops!
Ewes were much dearer than expected! An overall show of 211 Ewes to average £72.30 and 19 Rams to Average £89.90 Ewes sold to a top price of £129.50 from J Taylor, Horrocks Fold, Bolton. Best Continental Ewes above £110 up to £129.50 Good meated Tex x mules ewes £80-£95 with biggest mules ewes making £80+ with lean meat mules £72-£78. Skipton Requires more cull ewes every week with a good following of buyers operating for slaughter orders and grazing orders!
