PRIME SHEEP (3,989 Head)
A slightly smaller show of sheep this
week but the trade was marginally up for all classes of lambs.
For comparison purposes, the Standard
Quality Quotation (SQQ) which is lambs up to 45kg, and so is not to be confused
with the overall market average, stands at 175.23p/kg at Skipton today.
The sale today had many beltex lambs
of which the best end sold from 220p up to 261p for 42kg at £110 from Hannah
Brown, beating her father Martin who sold pens at 253p and 257p twice including
41kg at £104 each. Paul Simpson from Bolton by Bowland and Clive Robinson from
Tosside both had pens at 250p/kg. Commercial Beltex types 190p to 220p. With
handy weighted lambs being short of requirements nationwide, anything Texel
cross with a nice covering of flesh were 185p to 195p. Commercial types of
sheep, regardless of weight were £25 to £32 over the weight depending upon
flesh and skin quality.
The hill lambs were a sharper trade,
better Mule lambs 160p to 165p, Swaledale and Dalesbred lambs generally around
the 150p mark. Cast Sheep were a shade sharper on the week.

A fantastic
entry of Dairy cows with the shippon and a number of outside stalls full with
milkers
and subequent alleys below all full with a grand total of 102 head of which
68 In milk 8 In Calf
1 Bull and 25 Maidens and Bullers. Judge Stephen Coates of the Bailmoor
Holstein herd had the
hardest task of the day with judging a tremendous show of cows.
Eventually the Champion was
chosen and it came to one of our constant supporters David Lawson and
Wife Claire,
with Brian Moorhouse a very close second. The Champion a Pedigree
Homebred Heifer from
the Newbirks Jazz family with 5 gens of VG or EX behind it. The beast
was knocked down for a
CCM record price of £3950. The trade although a little tentative at the
start soon warmed up with the large majority of vendors receiving a strong
trade. The Youngstock was not so hot with the pick of trade being the £500 each
for two 10 week old heifer calves from Alan Throup, Silsden Moor. All in all a
great day and proof we can sell big numbers and sell them well.
