Countrystyle Meats from Wyresdale Road, Lancaster stepped up to secure the highest priced gross beast , a 565kg Bazadais cross heifer from Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield at 244.5p/kg or £1381 and the highest priced animal p/kg at 268.5p (£1275), a 475kg Limousin cross heifer from Mesrs AA&E Critchley & Son of Hutton.

2,854 Prime Sheep

Numbers of lambs continue to grow each week and trade remained surprisingly strong, registering at 222p across the board. Heavier lambs however averaged much more than this, the 46-52kg bracket levelling at 230.9p, and 41-45kg levelling at 227p. A lot of lambs today 36kg to 38kg from 215p to 220p for commercial types, 225p for nice types, and 235-250 for the smarter end.
£120 was achieved on three occasions today. Mike Allen from Staithes was first at £120 also with the top kilo price of 285.7p for Beltex crosses sold to Countrystyle Meats. John Turner from Draughton was next when his pen of 9 Charollais Crosses weighing 52kg sold for £120 to Swaledale Foods. Mark Ireland from Whalley achieved £120 when his 46kg Texel crosses sold to Hartshead Meats in Mossley. Three other vendors achieved £119, Tony Kiernan, Thomas Walmsley and Messrs Kayley.

410 Cull Ewes average £65.03

The trade for Cull Sheep was solid on the week. Not as many heavy ewes about, but good Mules either side of £80, best horned ewes either side of £60, a shortage of cast rams saw these sell well to an average of £82.64.

Rearing Calves to £490 (46)

Calves sold away very well this morning with S&PE Bowker & Sons of Earby topping the days trade with a British Blue bull at £490. RL Wright & Son of Airton and C&SB Whitelock, Gargrave both received £440 for their best calves. Colin Whitelock also topped the Heifers seeing his two heifers hit £400 with Martyn Jennings of Cowling at £390 and £380.

Black and whites topped at £205 for a pure Friesian from Stephen Marshall of West End and Bowker’s saw theirs reach £160 with a few smaller calves bringing the average into the £70’s.

Calves wanted every week with prices as strong as ever at the minute.
