PRIME SHEEP (4,133 head)
A good entry of lambs met with a very
spirited trade. With numbers short in Welsh
markets in the morning due to adverse weather conditions buyers arrived in
force at
Skipton keen for sheep. Vendors were
not disappointed either with Mule lambs significantly dearer on the week. Farm
Assurance was a definite advantage for these today with the best end around
150p/kg £22 to £25 over the weight. Export weight first cross Texels generally
around £24 to £27 over the weight, with heavies 150p to 165p. The overall average
rose 10.1p/kg or £5 per head on the week. Ewes are starting to recover in price
to record a £60 per head average for what was a good show of meated ewes.

The Xmas Calf
Show proved a huge success with an entry of some top quality calves going to a
vast
number of
buyers. The top honours and the winner of the Arthur Newman Trophy was the
Sowray Bros.
of Bishop
Thornton. The British Blue Bull Calf sold for £580 to Mr Campbell of
Horton-in-Ribblesdale.
With a solid
number of calves forward it proves that Skipton can create as good a price as
anywhere for
every
standard of calf.

CRAVEN DAIRY AUCTION (44 head)
Thirteen top quality newly calven
heifers gave judge Wilmot Blockley a stern test in selecting his
Champion. This was presented by
Andrew Jennings and sold to the judge for £2000. Second placed
Heifer and Reserve Champion was shown
by Eric and Sally Wellock and topped the day at £2250 to Alf
Townsend. A good complement of buyers
ensured a strong trade throughout with a lot of good heifers
consistently making £1800 to £2000.
Older cows were also easier to place.
