Prime Sheep

An increased show of lambs met with what was generally a similar trade on the week. Smart goods were exceedingly good to sell, mainly around 200p selling  up to 244p from John Garnett of Draughton purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. A handy weighted lamb also received a good following so long as they well finished, 150p-155p being the norm for the day, with a more commercial type 145p. In the heavy lambs, smarter end selling 140p to 150p, and a commercial type 130p to 135p. Hill bred lambs beginning to make up a greater proportion of the sale, Horned Wethers 125p to 130p, Mule Wethers around £12-£14 over the weight. An overall average of 145p was recorded for 3,464 lambs sold.

Strong numbers of dairy calves forward this morning with B&W and MRI’s taking up 60% of the sale. Black  and whites were certainly healthier with the best nicely into the early £100’s with competition strong for commercial types making a healthy average. Best blues from Geoff and Margaret Booth topped the continentals at £390 for a strong blue bull.

Craven Dairy Auction (36 head)

A wide range of goods on sale again with trade a certainly a touch dearer with no rocketing prices but a strong bottom made all types a handy trade. Fresh heifers regularly making good money today with even the poorer sorts selling away well with bidders plentiful right through the sale.  Robert Crisp of Calton took top honours today with his big dark heifer which sold for £1880 to regular supporter Alf and Andrew Townsend.

Youngstock again saw some good competition with heifer calves well fought over to average £325 for 5-8 week old good.
