3,832 Prime Sheep comprising 3389 Prime Lambs, & 443 Cast Ewes & Rams
A decent show of sheep today with 3400 lambs presented and sold. As expected, the handyweight sheep were keenly contested and short of requirements, as were the smart Beltex types with an electric trade for runs of quality hard fed types, but grass fed commercial heavy lambs (over 45kg) were plentiful in number and coming under price pressure, especially for the more commercial types, with meat market and catering demand suffering as a result of local lockdowns both here and abroad.
At the top end of the scale it was Skipton regular Nigel Boynton from Ripon who took top price honours when selling 47kg Beltex at £146, 45kg Beltex at £140, 49kg Beltex at £133 and 48kg Beltex £127.50, with all four pens heading over to Hartshead Meats Ltd in Mossley.
E&M Townley & Son of Clapham topped their run with 41kg Beltex at £139, these also being the top price per kilo at 339p, again they sold to Hartshead Meats.
KG&JL Huck of Bordley sold Beltex at 45kg, making £137.50, and these went to Hartshead Meats as well.
JS Eddleston of Great Harwood presented 49kg Beltex making £133, selling to Hartshead Meats Ltd.
S&P Scrivin from Elslack had 48kg Beltex at £128.50 to Hartshead Meats Ltd, and 45kg at £128 to Keelham Farmshop in Skipton.
JG Hall & Son of Gargrave sold 47kg Beltex at £128.50, and these were purchased by Hartshead Meats Ltd.
TH Mellin of Black Lane Ends sold 51kg Beltex at £128 each, to Keelham Farmshop in Skipton.
NL&CJ Brown from Claughton Lancaster had 39kg Beltex at £127.50, these were the second highest price per kilo on the day at 326p and they sold to Vivers Scotlamb.
12 pens this week at 300p or more, and 52 pens at 250p to 295p. If you have these types of lambs for sale then please speak to Ted Ogden about trade and to book lambs in for sale, many more of this type required.
As said earlier, the Lowland handyweights were a sharp trade all day, and probably just a shade dearer on the week, but with lambs having done well during the Autumn, there is a large percentage of heavies on the market at the moment and this is holding the trade for these.
Hill bred lambs were harder work also for the very heavies, but handier weight sorts, especially farm assured, found trade ok and looked nicely sold. Top price Mules at £88.50 for a pen of 26 from James and Simon Garth of Keasden, Clapham.
Heavy ewes sold similar on the week. Top price of £131.50 J Long for Texels, followed by £125.50 from S Spensley. Best bred heavy ewes £120+ with first cross heavies £108-£120. Lean continental ewes and light weight meat ewes would be less on the week especially after the flyer last week. Heavy mules still the same sold with heavies selling to a top of £85.50 twice. Heavies from £70-£85 depending on size and finish lean meat mules £56-£68 and plain ewes anywhere below with some real plain goods in the teens to early £20’s. Swales less on the week both meat and lean. Best swale ewes sold to £50 from early £40’s. Lean in the £20’s.

As expected a total show of 44 head included 21 bull calves, 13 heifer calves, 5 Steer stirks and 5 heifer stirks. Steer stirks sold very well with trade for these selling from £340-£440 for 3 month old goods which some auctions may call calves we have put them in a separate avg. Blue steers 3months plus avg £406. Blue heifers again 3 months plus sold well with quality selling with frame wanted most goods selling either side of £350 with odd ones just less with less conformation. Blue bull calves set a trade today with some young goods on offer as usual selling to £410 from JP+KE Hartley followed closly behind at £390 from JC Marshall. £320+ for the better ended goods with some good rearing calves still either side of the £300. Angus bulls not much power but still some good rearing calves making £255 and £235. Angus heifers sold similar as last week with only 2 on sale. Blue heifer calves not including the run if 3 month plus calves sold to £270 from JC Marshall followed on at £260 from JR Wellock. Not many blue heifers in the entry and more could of defiantly been sold with size selling the best as seen with the older heifers earlier in the report.
