Malcolm Metcalfe also headed the field with the highest priced by weight price of the day at 250.5p/kg for a 530kg Blonde cross heifer which also sold to Keelham Farm Shop at a gross of £1328.

Prime Sheep
A similar entry of sheep today were a better trade on the week with all classes a couple of £’s dearer, overall average of 174p/kg (+3p on the week)
Smart lambs were a sharp trade all sale long, Henry Atkinson topped the market at £124 for 42kg Beltex crosses sold to Vivers Scotlamb, followed at £119 for Beltex crosses from Taylor Bros Rathmell selling to Thomas Shepherdson. Taylor Bros had 3 further pens selling for £113 £109 £106. Fox Farms from Clitheroe had a nice run of lambs at £109 £105 and £103, whilst Henry Atkinson had a further pen at £104 and Ian Marsden from Hoylandswaine near Penistone. The top price per kilo was 295.2p/kg from Henry Atkinson, with the same vendor making 265.7p & 251.4p for Beltex crosses. Taylor Bros made 262.8p 242.9p 242.4p and 240.9p of their run of lambs, Fox Farms 253.5p, John Eddleston from Great Harwood made 248.6p and 243.6p of Beltex crosses whilst Mike Allen of Staithes made 246.2p.
Commercial Lowland Lambs at handy weights (38kg to 43kg) were keenly contested all sale long, 185p for 200p for nice skinned sorts 175p to 180p for the others, and lighter continental lambs were dearer than last week.
Heavy Lowland lambs (46kg to 52kg) were a shade dearer than last week, with the smartest butchers types making 200p plus, to a top of 242.9p for 49kg from Taylor Bros of Rathmell. Henry Atkinson made 216.7p of 48kg adding up to £104, whilst Ian Marsden made 212.4p of 49kg or £104. James Towler of Steelands Farm, Grindleton made 210.6p of 47kg Beltex crosses or £99 per head.
Hill bred lambs were dearer on the week. The best Mules and Mashams generally were £30 to £32 over the weight, Steve Dorey topped at £85 others at £77.50(x2) and £77(x2), Bob Stubbs made the trip up from Cheshire and topped at £78 and Jeff Pickles at £77.50 were the leading prices, per kilo tops of 179.3p for Mashams (43kg @ £77) from Steve Dorey, the same vendor had others at 179.1p 178.0p(x2) and 174.4p, Messrs Kitching from Grisedale Farm made 175.6p, Bob Stubbs 173.0p and Kevin Wilson, Blubberhouses 172.2p. Horned lambs toped at £78 from Chris Crowther of Oldham, the same vendor also selling at £73.50, Swaledale lambs to £70 from Stephen Taylor of Sheffield, and £69.50 from Messrs Palmer of Twiston, whilst per kilo they sold at 169.6p and 162.5p from Chris Crowther, also 162.2p from Steve Dorey. Cheviots this week topped at £82 or 195p from Tony Kiernan of Longridge plenty of other nice pens in the 180’s.
Ewes were again dearer recording an overall average of £67, although to be fair there was good show of mainly heavier ewes and a smaller proportion of horned ewes than of late. Best Heavy ewes £110 to £120, nice Continental Ewes eitherside of £100, best end of Mules £69-£70 and good Horned & Hill Ewes £50 to £60.

An increased entry of Ewes with Lambs @ foot for this week’s sale attracted a larger ringside of buyers a similar trade was also see to the week before. Best single outfits equivalent of £75-£90 per life. Best twins £65 per life and commercial types £50-£60 per life. Top price for twins today was £200 for a correct Charlollais x Ewe with Beltex lambs from Stephen Pepper of Oxenhope, the same vendor sold Beltex x Charollais Ewes with single Cont x lambs for £180. Messrs Shepherd of Pateley Bridge sold Suffolk ewes with singles for £160 and texel ewes with twins for £180 on two occasions. Richard Umpleby of Killinghall sold two pens of Suffolk ewes with twins for £180.

Quieter show of calves following show week with a serious mix in the quality of calves through the ring. Fred Houseman and Martyn Jennings saw the peak of the trade seeing their bulls at £410 and £400 respectively. Black and whites a touch dearer on the weak with best calves all around the £100 mark up to £115 for a strong calf from John Marshall, Dacre.

Craven Dairy Auction (31 head)
A small show of milkers today but a boat load of buyers for them. Milkers found some fierce bidding with Peter Baul’s week calved heifer topping proceedings at £1720 giving 25 litres. Incalf cattle were good to sell with D&P Brown of Ramsgill seeing their heifer top the section at £1250 with Duncan Holme next at £1180. Incalf cows from the Brown family of Earby found their 6th Calver incalf cows harder to place topping at £720.
A run of Organic Brown Swiss X Holstein Heifers saw a full clearance despite the heifers not being quite big enough for their age they topped at £690.
