Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)
A good entry of cattle lending more to the heavier and commercial end of the retail market. Top gross came from the pen of CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield, a Limousin cross heifer weighing 590kg which added up to £1437 when making 243.5p/kg and selling to Robertshaws Farm Shop at Thornton. Robertshaws also bought the leading gross priced steer a 615kg Limousin cross from Simon Bennett of Silsden Moor which made £1381 or 224.5p/kg. Barkers Yorkshire Butchers of Skipton picked up the leading price per kg a Limousin cross heifer weighing 575kg at 249.5p/kg from CD&RF Kitching but there was strong support from all sides of the ring with Robertshaws Farm Shop buying 7, Keelham Farm shop, Skipton 4, George Cropper,Sandersons Butchers, Baxenden 4 and Barkers Yorkshire Butchers 4.

Cull Cow Prices
A wet day brought a few more cows on to the market and trade was more than ready to absorb the extra. The dairies crept into 140p/kg at the top end with most heavy dairies 130p+. Lean dairies were from 92.5kg to 118p/kg. Beef cross dairy suckler cows were to 157.5p/kg or £1071.

Another grand day at CCM with nearly 4000 sheep on offer including 3289 lambs presented and sold, levelling at 233p/kg or £95.64 per head, representing a 14p/kg rise on the week.
All classes were good to sell with a sharp demand from ethnic customers looking to secure supply ahead of Qurbani. N&AD Boynton from Ripon took the three highest prices per kilo, and 3 out of the 4 highest prices per head. Leading the way at 329p or a whopping £158 was Mr Boynton’s pen leader selling to Brayton Farmshop in Selby who purchased two other lots of lambs at £140 each again from Mr Boynton and then from L Simpson & Sons of Pateley Bridge. Mr Boynton’s second highest price per kilo was 315p or £139 per head selling to MN Alam of Lancashire Direct Halal Meat in Blackburn. Mr Boynton’s 3rd highest price pen per kilo made 311.9p or £131 per head selling to Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton, Bradford. Mr Boyntons run of lambs averaged 44kg 312p/kg and £138.56 per head.
Tony Kiernan from St Michaels made his usual trip to Skipton to be well rewarded with a quality run of lambs, topping at 309.8p with 41kg at £127 selling at Vivers Scotlamb. Further pens from this home sold for £121 for 43kg and £114 for £42.
3 more pens made over 300p from E Pennock & Son, Bolton Abbey and PA&NS Tattersall, York and A&AR Phillipson, Brierfield. 46 Pens of Lambs today sold for over £120 per head.
Worthy of note was the largest run of lambs penned in the market, they came from JA&JH Hewetson of Gargave who had 269 Texel crosses averaging 41.7kg and £101.03 per head.
Hill bred lambs today selling to a sharp trade, Mule Wethers averaging 214p, selling to £96.50 and 224p from G&MA Lawn of Skipton, closely followed at £95.50 and 223.8p from JC &N Throup, Draughton. Lightweight Swaledale lambs also making an appearance and the main of these were good backed fresh looking wethers, selling to 219p or £63.50 for 29kg from AJ Mason of Embsay, whilst Sheila Mason from Keasden made 200p 28kg at £56, others at £66 from the same home.

676 Ewes and Hoggs met to a fiercer trade than expected! The sale consisted of a large proportion of plain sheep. Plenty of grazing orders ringside along with the usual slaughter orders. 246 white faced ewes came to an average of £90 and top of £128.50. Best ewes £120-£128.50 heavy ewes with less conformation £115+ Medium white faced ewes regular £90 and plain grazing sorts in the £70-£80 range. 174 Mules sold. £80-£85 for the good lean meat with weight, fat Mules falling behind at the mid to late £70 mark. Swales sold dear on the week with tops of £79.50 for some heavy ewes. Grazing horned ewes around mid £30’s with some reaching £40’s. Lean meat ewes £42-£50 range.

50 Rearing Calves to £450
Black and Whites met a fierce trade. Trade topped at £205 with an average price of £112. Lim Bulls best suckler bred sorts up to £440 with an average trade being achieved of £317. Blue Bulls came to an average of £409 with all Blue Bulls selling £350-£450. A couple of 8-week-old calves in there but as always the majority of calves either side of 4 weeks. Angus Bulls topped at £360, plenty of bobby’s in the mix there all selling £205 an above. 15 Blue Heifers sold to a top price of £390 with most heifers selling in the range of £350-£390 for good shaped calves but some of these under 4 weeks of age. Some smaller ones selling in £250-£290 but majority over £300.

Today’s top price goes to this good Dalliance heifer from Sally Wellock (pictured in the byre) of the Harehills herd at £2320. Thanks to our five vendors who brought a good show of nine animals forward on the day. Great to see more buyers ringside in our socially distanced bidding booths.
We really had something for everyone- 7 in milk heifers averaged £1951, one in milk cow made £1700 and one cross bred in calf heifer made £1300, with four over £2000 and seven purchasers of the nine animals forward.

Monday 10th August: Dispersal sale of the Wharfedale milking portion of 40 head from Messrs Blackburn, including pictured Wharfedale Dreamer Lady VG86 a 2nd calver giving over 30kg from an EX93-2E dam (pictured in the field) - she shows the type of cows the herd has - great udders, good feet and legs and bags of potential.
