4,789 Prime Sheep

A tremendous entry of 4,174 lambs met with a far better trade on the week, the average up by 12p/kg! . As stated last week, handy weight lambs have been short of requirements recently and vendors responded by presenting more lambs in the 40kg to 43kg weight range, and were generally very well rewarded, 170p to 180p being common place for nice commercial lambs, the 36kg to 45kg weight range average on the day stands at 171.1p/kg. Even though there was a nice show of the handy weights, heavy lambs were still plentiful, with 1180 lambs scaling 46kg or more, trade for these was generally £2 to £4 per head dearer than last week.

The smart Beltex lambs were very good to sell today, the list of prices over £2 is too numerous to mention, but tops were £98 from DN&D Capstick, Bolton by Bowland and also £98 from Richard & Mark Ireland of Whalley. George Parker of Slaidburn topped the prices at 248.7p/kg.

Hill bred lambs were also better  with Mules mainly 5p/kg to 8p/kg dearer on the week.

A large show of 615 cast sheep maintained the trade of recent weeks.

For potential customers information, the actual prices and actual averages achieved at Skipton today are detailed below. Have a read through and then make an informed choice of where you should be selling your lambs.

A strong trade with a lot of extra custom around with half term. British Blue heifers were in strong demand with 13 averaging £349 almost catching the bulls at an average around £357. Other continentals were also on fire with Simmentals to £345 for month old goods and a Blonde D’Aquitaine to £330.

Black and White Calves were up through the gears today with extra buyers in the market taking the top to £185 and averaging £67.58 for a good run of Calves all under 1 ½ months of age.

Harder work throughout today with the milk cheques starting to make a dent in the buyers pockets with cattle less right the way through the sale. Top end struggled to make record prices with Robert Crisp and Jeremy Taylor enjoying the best of the trade reaching £1860 for some strong heifers. Middle of the road heifers were good to sell just not to a massive price. With all animals averaging £1641, a straight trade with buyers and sellers satisfied with the outcome in the dairy industry’s current difficult trading conditions.
