Satisfactory trade given national trading patterns and export demand. Meat and Farm Assurance makes a telling difference with the odd exception for good feeding sorts to be kept beyond the 90 day retention period.

PRIME SHEEP (4,119 Head)
A larger show of sheep met with a firmer trade averaging 2ppk more on the week. Hill Bred lambs were especially better to sell, with Mule wethers generally at £25 at £30 over the weight, Mules up 6p on the week. Best Mule prices were Ken Dickinson with 42kg at £73, Mellisa Pickard sold 42kg at £72 and Angus Dean had 44kg at £76. The Lowland lambs were generally 175p to 185p for the nice export weights and around 170p for the more commercial sorts, in English this means the nicer 38kg to 41kg sorts were £30 to £34 over the weight and the commercial sorts were £27 to £29 over the weight. The premium end saw 24 lots sell for £2 per kilo or more with Richard Caton leading the sale at 255.6p/kg with 36kg at £92 each, with another pen of 37kg at £88.50, John Garnett sold 38kg at £91, John & Julie Barnes’s 37kg made £88 whilst Richard Frankland’s 41kg made £97 each. Lightweight lamb trade was underpinned by a few buyers operating with store lamb orders.

CRAVEN DAIRY AUCTION (32 head)
A very good show of cattle were forward for the BOCM Pauls Ltd Show and Sale.
Brian Moorhouse, Bell Busk had the task of judging with the Heifers a particularly strong class,
after wittling the numbers down to a few he eventually chose a sweet Pedigree Heifer from
Church Farm Enterprises which had calved 21 Days and giving 31ltrs. Reserve Champion was
picked up by David Lawson with another smart pedigree heifer. Trade for newly calved cattle
was less with the overall average £70 back on last sale. Some smart incalf cattle met some
strong bidding with 6 from WG Walmsley averaging £1315.
