Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Clean cattle trade was steadier with Keelham Farm Shop securing 8 purchases including the leading gross priced animal a 620kg Limousin cross steer sold by Mesrs AA&E Critchley & Son of Hutton which made 233.5p/kg or £1448 whilst also adding the leading p/kg price a 530kg Britsh Blue cross heifer also from Mesrs Critchley for 249.5p.  Leading steer p/kg was a 550kg Limousin cross from TW Cowperthwaite which sold to Hamlets Butchers at Garstang for 246.5p.

Cull Cow Prices

A few more Beef cross cows but still 80% dairies and trade continued the recent gradual improvement. Empty, meated ,dairies were comfortably 113-117p throughout and the lean end also well supported from 80-90p. An improved selection of Beef cows including a heavy Native in a  920kg Belted Galloway from Tom Boothman of Linton which made £1007 and the section headed by a fed Limousin cow at £1116 or 139.5p/kg from Simon Bennett, of Silsden Moor. Once again a good lineup of buyers to sell the cast cows to.

Prime Sheep


More sheep about today and a very nice trade as well. Quite a few lots of smart sheep, and top price this week went to James Towler of Grindleton with 42kg Beltex at £120 per head or 285p/kg when selling to Vivers Scotlamb. There was a strong trade all day for nice bred lambs with a decent bit of weight, Ron Wartigg from Thurgoland made £119 and £117 twice for Texels, DN&D Capstick of Bolton by Bowland made £118, £122 and £110 twice of Texels, J Shuttleworth & Sons of Rylstone had 45kg Beltex sell for £115 each, Mike Allen of Staithes had Beltex at £112 and £110 each. The following vendors who all sold lambs at £110 were JS Eddleston of Great Harwood, T Walmsley of Haverah Park, D&A Livestock Haverah Park and CM&EM Gratton of Warsill. A further 33 pens sold for £100 to £109. Beltex types handy weights were generally 235p to 250p. Commercial lambs upkept last weeks good rates, with nice skinned sorts 210p to 220p, and first crosses 190-205p.
Hill breed lambs were again good to sell with Mules increasing in value each week and coming nicely nto season. A few pens of heavy Mule sinto the 90’s topping at £96 from Mike Allen, whilst Andrew Taylor of Broughton topped at 189p, and Steve Dorey had Mashams at 206p. Breed average of 183.3p. Overall sale average for lambs of 194p.
Good Ewes continue to sell well, whilst lean ewes are harder to cash.

Rearing Calves to £420 (45)

Cracking trade in the calf ring this morning with a packed ringside of buyer around our temporary ring. The trade of the day was for the black and white bulls with a storming average of £122.87 with 10 over £100 and topping at £230 twice for a two of the finest black and white bulls from Stephen Marshall of West End. Best continental bulls are still commanding strong prices with a limousin bull from David and Richard Pickersgill of Hawksworth reaching £420 however it was the heifers today that outstripped their male counterparts with Lim heifers averaging £362 and apart from a run of twin heifers, british blue heifers were a flying trade with Church Farm Enterprises topping at £405 and £400.

Craven Dairy Auction

 A small show today but a cracking trade and a good show of quality even though there wasn’t many on offer. The three Pedigree Bulls drew a large crowd and some fierce bidding, especially Ingleview Casper. A well fleshed bull boasting a strong back pedigree sold for £2200 to Mark Goodall of Tong, Bradford. Another bull entry from Brian Moorhouse didn’t quite reach the mark in the ring but sold outside for £1800. In the milkers David Fort topped the day with a lovely, sweet 30kg heifer selling for £1820 to AG Parker of Emley. A run of handy Incalf heifers from Stephen Simpson of Bishop Monkton got away nicely topping at £1300 and averaging £1233.
