Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Martin Brown from Leyburn was in good form for beef accounting for all of the main highlights including the leading gross a 570kg Limousin cross steer from Malham Moor’s Bill Cowperthwaite which made 248.5p/kg or £1416. The top priced p/kg beast on the day was a 535kg Limousin heifer from RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton which sold to Mr Brown for 253.5p/kg or £1356. The top gross heifer was a 565kg Limousin cross consigned by Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield which made £1381 or 244.5p. A handful of commercial cattle sold well with thick meated 450kg heifers headed up at 232.5p/kg and a 540kg Limousin steer at 213.5p/kg for those monitoring the progress of R and O+ type cattle.

Cull Cow Prices

Overall Average                                   101.34p/kg           £626.58

Cows a deceiving average with a fair percentage of lean, plain cows in the entry. Suffice to say that cows carrying finish 110-116.5p/kg for dairies and the beef crosses to 142.5p/kg. Plain cows not quite as dear but the hot weather of last week has dampened the enthusiasm of some feeders who are compelled to farm cows for a minimum period before they are eligible to sell to a factory.

3,390 Prime Sheep comprising 2325 Spring Lamb & Hoggs and 1065  Cast/feeding Ewes & Rams

A large number of sheep entered for sale today with 2,325 Lambs sold and a huge show of 1,065 Cast/Feeding Ewes & Rams.

Lambs were dearer than the end of last week, with an overall selling average settling at 180.8p/kg across the board topping at 325p/kg or £130 per head for the Champion Young Handlers Lamb shown by Kieran Robinson from Barnoldswick. George Cropper from Sanderson’s Butchers was the judge for this year’s event (full results below) and competition from the youngsters was strong, but it was Kieran who retained his title for another year and made top price in sale.

The lamb trade was very similar on the week, smart heavy lambs were £100 to £115 depending on quality, the next grade of commercial lambs weighing 49kg to 55kg were selling between £90 and £100, whilst commercial 46kg to 48kg between £85-£90.

Smart lambs found a ready following today selling at 230p to 265p, and outwith the young handlers show prices, Henry Atkinson sold a pen of 10 Beltex’s weighing 38kg at £103 or 271.1p/kg, whilst Alaistair Sutcliffe Carlton in Cleveland topped his run of Texel Beltex Lambs at 233p (39kg £91) and Richard Spink Leyburn saw his run of lambs peak at 230p (40kg £92).

A large entry of over 1000 Cast & Feeding Ewes today saw a plainer and lighter show of sheep getting away to decent returns. Good lowland ewes £75 to £100, best Mules in the 70’s, 2nd grade late 60’s, decent Hill ewes in the 50’s next grade in the 40’s.

19 Young Farmers turned out for this year’s Annual YFC Show & Sale. Firstly, they had to show their handling skills under today’s show judge George Cropper and then sell them their selves in the auction ring...…

Rearing Calves to £412 (62 head)

B&W av £76 Cont av. £271, Native av.£151

Calves continue to be very good to sell with no shortage of customers for Continentals, both Bulls and heifers, with Rob Marshall’s (JC Marshall) Blue calf 41 days of age at £400, Continentals peaking at £412 for a Charolais cross (36 days) from D Smith. Black and Whites a particularly good trade if well reared to 28 days or thereabouts regardless of Holstein percentage and those younger receiving plenty of support from local stirk rearers. The same buyers also keenly contested the younger calves sourced from coloured dairy herds and the sire identified Native were equally well sold for the age of today’s entries.
