Ken and Hazel
Gamble, of Brickyard Farm, Easingwold, achieved a notable championship double
in the annual Christmas shows of cull cows and cast sheep at Skipton Auction
Mart. (Mon, Dec 2)
The Gambles saw
their pure-bred British Blue cow, by one their own stock bulls, first land the
cull cow crown, before selling for the leading per head and by-weight price of £1,140, or
159.5p/kg to Muchmeats, of Witney in Oxfordshire.
Mr and Mrs Gamble then learned that their first prize
pen of five pure-bred Texels had clinched the cast ewe title, before again
selling for the top call of £109.50 per head to Yorkshire Halal Meats for its
supermarket in Alice Street, Keighley.
The reserve cast cow championship was awarded to James
Hall, of Darnbrook, with the first prize native breed entry, a Longhorn sold
for 96.5p/kg. Top price in class of £816 fell to the third prize Beef Shorthorn
from the Drake farming family in Thornton, Bradford.
The first prize dairy-bred entry, a black and white
from G Pickersgill & Sons, of Hawksworth, Guiseley, sold for 121.5p/kg.
Back with the cast ewes, the reserve championship was
awarded to the first prize pen of Mules from Threshfield’s Angus Dean.
