Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

With most shops taking stock after the Christmas break a small show to meet the interim demand met a firm trade. Both Barkers Yorkshire Butchers and Paul Ellison of Cullingworth were at the ringside looking for stock with the spoils shared between the two. The top p/kg purchase was 237.5p/kg paid by Ellisons for a 555kg British Blue cross heifer (£1318) from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield with the same seller heading up the gross prices with a 600kg British Blue cross steer selling to Barkers Yorkshire Butchers for £1371 or 228.5p/kg. Next week is the Opening sale of 2020 and the January Primestock Show and we expect a full complement of buyers.

4,111 Prime Sheep comprising 3706 Prime Lambs, 405 Cast Ewes & Rams

What a way to finish the year, 3700 lambs at 208pkg average and over £90 per head average for what was a more commercial type show than in recent weeks. Best lambs were again a cracking trade, 6 pens 300p or more, to a top of 316.7p for 36kg Beltex at £114 each sold by PW Simpson of Bolton by Bowland.  64 more pens of lambs sold from 240p to 294.9p. In the lump, there were plenty of 3 figure prices this week, 5 pens £120 plus, and 35 pens £110 to £119, 86 pens £100 to £109.50, very much helped by heavy types being dearer by a decent margin on the week. R&M Towell from Glusburn topped the sale at £125 for Texels purchased by Joe Bosworth. Handy weight sheep were again good to sell, especially with ethnic type orders to the fore today.

Cast sheep were a smaller show on the week with 405 head forward for sale but a very strong trade averaging £80. Lowland ewes were very good to sell, strong sorts £100 to £130, with Down/Suffolk crosses av £104 and Texels av £98. Mule ewes again good to sell, best sorts in the £90’s, topping at £106.50 and av £87. Horned Ewes sold to £85.50 and £78.50 for Lonks, £69.50 for Swaledales and £55.50 for Herdwicks. Horned Ewes av £57.
