Prime Sheep
Sheep numbers tighter this week, but trade warmed up very nicely, being 10p-15p dearer than morning markets. Again the smart lambs were keenly bid for, Messrs JG Hall & Son of Gargrave had joint top price of £112 per head for Beltex crosses purchased by Vivers Scotlamb whilst Messrs Simpson of Bolton by Bowland topped the sale at £112 each for Beltex crosses purchased by Hamlets Butchers of Garstang. William Shuttleworth from Rylstone was next in line at £111 purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. Other Leading prices were Henry Atkinson £109 £103 £100, JG Hall & Sop £104, Ellis Bros £103, PR Simpson £102 £100, William Shuttleworth £100, JR Crabtree £100.
p/kg it was William Shuttleworth who led the sale at 250p and 246.7p, both lots purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. Henry Atkinson made 245.2p and 244.1p, DW&CJ Towler 239.7p, JG Hall & Son 238.3p, RJ Lambert 230.0p and Fox Farms 230.p. The next grade of ¾ bred lambs were around 10p-15p/kg dearer on the week, with regular buyers again keen for the handy weights and two additional new buyers at the ringside looking for numbers too.
Heavy lambs were a much better trade too, with the 46kg-52kg averaging 172.7p/kg, a significant rise on the week. Mule and Hill bred lambs were generally 5p-10p dearer on the week, good Mules taking a nice lift.
In the ewe market, an extra face ringside just helped the trade, with nice leaner ewes selling away well and an overall average of £61 a pleasing result. Best Mules & Mashams either side of £70 up to £76.50. Heavy Continental Ewes nicely into three figures, and good Horned Ewes in the mid £50’s up to to £63.50 for Dalesbreds from JC&DJ Marshall & Sons.
