PRIME CATTLE CHRISTMAS SHOW
The Christmas Primestock Show curtailed and changed to a Monday from its traditional Sunday fixture proved to be a huge success made possible by a buoyant retail trade with a sale average of 292p/kg. Leading the prices was a heifer considered ideal for shop trade, a 490kg homebred Limousin cross from John Stephenson from Bordley for the third consecutive year which sold to David Green for Mesrs K&J Green for 550p/kg or £2450 to be sold in their shops at Heskin and their recently opened establishment in Standish. The Reserve Champion was another Stephenson heifer this time a British Blue weighing 510kg which sold to James Robertshaw for Robertshaws Farm Shop in Thornton for 434.5p/kg or £2216. Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers of Bradford wrapped up the Male Champion and Reserve. The Champion a 480kg Limousin cross shown by Rosie Foster of Preston made269.5p/kg and the Reserve a 625kg Limousin cross from F&B Smith of Masongill which made 289.5p/kg.

**NEXT WEEK - CHRISTMAS SHOW & SALE OF LOWLAND PRIME LAMBS **
A cracking sale today with more lambs penned and trade very strong all through, with the Overall Sale average levelling at 222p/kg or £96.93 per head, and for comparison the SQQ stood at 226.1p.
Rob Lambert from Wigglesworth took top price per kilo at 339.5p when selling 43kg Beltex at £146 to Vivers Scotlamb.
D&A Livestock from Harrogate were selling at 329.3p for Beltex weighing in at 41kg and making £135 per head. The buyer again was Vivers Scotlamb.
James & Simon Garth from Keasden are regulars near the top of the price list, and today was no exception when they sold at 326.1p for 44kg Beltex at £143.50 with Vivers Scotlamb making it a clean sweep of the top three prices per kilo.
Ellis Bros, Addingham made 315p (44kg £139), as did MJ&G Taylor of Rathmell (38kg £120), closely followed by PW Simpson of Wigglesworth at 314p (43kg £135) who had 3 other pens at 300p or more.
99 pens today or 458 head of lambs making between 250p/kg at 339p/kg.
Per head, out with the prices listed above, PW Simpson made £138 & £135, Hayley Baines made £138 & £130, BL&R Lund, Walshaw made £138, at £135 were D&A Livestock Harrogate and WC Logan Malham Moor, Ellis Bros at £134, James & Simon Garth £130 and WA,VJ&JA Towler Grindleton also at £130. 38 Pens today at £120 or above.
As predicted over the weekend, handyweight lambs were a tremendous trade today, with 38kg to 41kg nice Continentals receiving a very good enquiry ringside, whilst 42kg to 45kg were also dearer on the week. Heavier Lowland lambs were expected to be a shade easier, but these bucked the pre-sale thoughts and were a good trade all through.
Mule Lambs were forward in larger numbers and trade for these was very similar on the week, with better runs top side of 200p, topping at 215p from J Taylor, Bolton. Some notable prices of large pens being 44 Mules at 44kg making £90.50 from G&MA Lawn, None go Bye. R&C Greenwood, Bradley had a pen of 23 Mules at 45kg £92, James Middleton of Arncliffe sold 22 at 43kg £88, PL Metcalfe 22 at 43kg £86.50, AJ Taylor 13 at 49kg £97.50 and 28 at 45kg £90, and CD&RF Kitching 44kg £91.50, S&P Scrivin 10 at 45kg £92.50.
Horned Wethers were definitely dearer on the week, with lightweight good finished types selling to a stronger trade on the week and buyers keen to secure this type of lamb, Horned tups like the wethers also finding stronger prices on the week. Best of the wethers seeing 43kg at £88 and 43kg at £87.40 from JA&JH Hewetson, tops per head at £93 from N Parker, Silsden.

Meat and Heavies were a similar trade selling to recent levels with a top of £147.50 for a Tup from JC Marshall, Harrogate. Top price ewe from G&G Thornton, Knaresborough £139.50 followed by R Spencer, Rotherham. Best Heavy ewes £128-£140 Heavy crossed £115-£125. Meat mediums £85-£92. Some small weight ewes in the £70’s with the odd plain ewes less money. Best Mules £90-£96.50 whilst grazing mules much dearer with pens regular £60-£70. Lean meat mules £73-£78. Horned ewes topped at £66.50 from K Lister & Sons with lean horned ewes dearer in the £45 region and plain Swales dearer on the week. Gritstone ewes £75.50.

Dearer than expected with young Blue calves both bulls and heifers selling tremendous. 4 week old heifers regular £285-£310 with a top of £315 from Ian Wellock, Malham. Whilst some 4 week old bulls sold away well upto £385 with only 10 out of the 45 in the entry blue bulls. Hereford bulls sold upto £240 from AP Townsend. Stronger 4 week old Native calves sold well. Hereford heifer also sold to £230 from the same vendor. Black and Whites sold well with a top price of £160 from J Caygill. Lim heifers sold to £250 from KT Wood whilst bulls sold to £315 from JC&DJ Marshall and KT Wood also reaching £310 for theirs.

CRAVEN DAIRY CHRISTMAS SHOW
Well that’s another Christmas show and sale over at CCM Skipton and huge thanks go to vendors, buyers and the judges John Harrison and Ernie Wilson.
Brian Moorhouse of the Aireburn herd at Bellbusk retained the Craven Cattle Marts trophy with his Champion and 1st prize heifer in milk Aireburn Crackshot Lou. Fresh 14 days this 30kg heifer is backed by 7 gens VG or EX and commanded the sales top price of £3000 as she heads to the Hitchen family at Luddenfoot. She was one of nine fresh heifers forward in the heifer in milk class, she was 1st ahead of a herdmate in 2nd and Geoff Booths Dowshawdale Mogul Dilys in 3rd. Of the 14 heifers forward 8 made £2000 or more with the 13 sold averaging £2060.
Two cows graced the cow in milk class and winning was a third calved non pedigree from the milky Trusting family of new vendors the Dunn’s at Helmsley. She made £1800 with the 2nd calver of Messrs Walker, Laycock making £1620. Thanks to everyone who made the sale a success with the overall average coming in at £2016. Last dairy sale of 2020 is Monday 14th December.
