A very good show of high quality cattle for a Bank Holiday and a very sharp trade. Robertshaws Farm Shop accounted for the top gross a 590kg Limousin cross heifer which returned £1555 to Charles and Richard Kitching of Threshfield when sold for 263.5p/kg. Top price p/kg overall was another Kitching heifer weighing 555kg which went to Keelham Farm Shop of Skipton at 267.5p/kg or £1485 whilst the top priced steer went to Alan Beecroft of Countrystyle Meats Ltd of Lancaster, yet another entry from Mesrs Kitching a Limousin weighing 565kg making 255.5p/kg or £1444. With buyers for 600kg cattle and smaller retail weights the heifers weighing 550kg were headed up by a 515kg Limousin cross heifer from RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton at 260.5p/kg.

2,996 Prime Sheep comprising 2552 Prime Lambs & 444 Cast Ewes & Rams

An excellent Bank Holiday entry of sheep today, and we saw a bounce back in prices after last weeks lacklustre affair, although it would also be fair to say there was a much better show for quality this week, and also a much better show for meat in the commercial types as farmers drew the best backed lambs, and left the leaner 36kg to 39kg types in the field, resulting in a great average for Bank Holiday Monday of £94.11 per head or 218.7p/kg.
At the top end there was some fire about today with Messrs N&AD Boynton from Ripon heading up the sale at a wonderful £150 per head or 340.9p/kg for 44kg Beltex selling to Vivers Scotlamb. Messrs Boynton sold a further pen at £134, this time to Andrew Atkinson.
JM Hall from Airton was next in line at £145.50 or 323p when selling to Vivers Scotlamb.
HR&WJ Maudsley from Rathmell picked up £139 per head for Beltex Rouge crosses when selling to Vivers Scotlamb, whilst W Holden & Son from Oswaldtwistle topped their run at £135 selling to A&D Meats in Rossendale. JA Gibson & Son from Church Fenton, Tadcaster consigned another good load of quality lambs, and they found favour with Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton, Bradford who secured their top pen at £134 per head.
Ellis Bros snook into the 300p club this week with a pair of lovely Beltex crosses weighing 41kg making £128.50 each or 313.4p and purchased by Vivers Scotlamb.
Alastair Jenkinson, Langbar, Ilkley was up at 294.2p selling Beltex to Vivers Scotlamb, whilst a brace of vendors achieved 290.9p/kg, first JC Marshall of Dacre, Harrogate again selling to Vivers Scotlamb, whilst Keelham Farmshop in Skipton secured the second pen at that money consigned by EP&JM Hutchinson, Faceby, Cleveland.
Plenty of the nice bred standard and medium weight lambs today 250p plus, but 225/235p a common price area for lowland lambs during the sale. Smarter Heavies 225/250, Commercial Heavies 215/220, with 46kg-52kg range averaging 223p, and 52kg plus at 226p. Texels averaged 218p, Rouge 226p and Beltex an excellent 246p!
In the hill bred breeds, Mule Wethers generally 190p plus, topping at 206.8p from Messrs J Garth & Son of Keasden Clapham with 44kg at £91, only out done on headage price by RF Morphet, Lancaster who sold at £94. Masham Wethers levelled at 206p topping 207.8p and £93.50 per head from A&SL Throup of Silsden Moor. More horned lambs about today with gathering underway in many parishes, Swaledales to 192p or £79 from C Nelson & Son of Bordley and 191.3p from Hayton & Stocks, Bolton Abbey who also sold Dalesbreds at 187p , followed by A&N Fothergill of Silsden at 183p. Nice fresh horned lambs are receiving a good following, but they must be fleshy and be well backed.

A strong trade on the ewes today with trade flying for heavy ewes as always and trade for large mules selling in the £80’s upto the early £90’s and topping at £101.50. Heavy Texels £120-£127.50. Heavy cross bred sheep £110+ Meat ewes £80+ with cheviots selling to £65.50. Meated Horned Ewes £48-£56. Lean Horned Ewes either side of £35 and plain Horned ewes £10-£22.
More lean ewes about with a more mixed trade but prices still holding very well. Weight definitely selling best. Keep them best ewes coming forward. Some grazing white faced ewes £50-£70 with some LLeyns less money.

45 Rearing Calves to £445

Nice entry forward today with 45 on sale. A lack of some buyers for certain classes due to the weather picking up today and harvest coming before anything else. Black and Whites seemed to get away well with a strong show forward but quality such as the British Friesians was lacked today. Angus bulls sold well once again with premium prices really coming for the good rearing natives. Angus Bull Calves topped at £300 from A Sowray with ID&JC Briggs at £290. Angus heifers all selling from £200-£250. Best Blue heifers to £300 which seemed less on the week where the bulls would be a touch less but still some premium prices paid for young calves for with a blue bull realising £445 from RE Ayrton followed by £430 A Sowray & Son. All Blue Bulls sold from £265-£465 with no weaned calves in the continentals today.
