3,056 Prime Sheep
Another decent show of sheep with over 3,000 again penned and sold. The 2,411 lambs were a sharper trade on the week and averaged 200p across the board. Today we held our Annual Young Handlers Prize Show & Sale of Prime Lambs and judging was conducted by Mrs Alison North. The 23 competitors across the three classes were all well presented and they brought out some wonderful lambs. Champion Young Handler for the second year in succession was the immaculately turned out Kieran Robinson, at only 4 years old he controlled his lamb well and it later sold for £145 to Keelham Farmshop. It was a family affair as Kieran’s father Scott took first place in the 17-26 year old category and later reserve champion.
Other Chief Prices saw Messrs Crabtree of Clifton selling lambs to £120, TH Mellin from Black Lane Ends also at £120, Messrs Ellison of Embsay at £117, Thomas Walmsley also sold to £117, both John Turner and Ian Marsden sold lambs at £116, whilst Scott Robinson and Charles Marwood sold lambs at £115. The smartest end of lambs today were either side of 250p/kg, outwith the champion that made 371.8p, other vendors with lambs above 250p were P Crabtree & Son from Clifton twice, Ellis Bros of Addingham Moorside twice, Ian Marsden of Hoylandswaine, Tony Kiernan of Longridge and P Johnson of Trawden. The next grade sold at 220p to 245p with 67 pens falling into this bracket. decent prime lambs 200p to 210p, whilst commercial types mainly 190-195p. Mule lambs 175p to 185p, best around 190p.
A huge show of Ewes and Rams saw more leaner fresh weaned types and trade was fast all types. Messrs Stockdale of Burnsall selling heavy ewes to £125.50, Anthony Hewetson of Bank Newton sold to £118.50, Messrs Fall of Middleham had ewes to £114.50, Messrs Robionson of Barnoldswick a pen of 6 at £113.50, several other good pens into 3 figures.

Summer show and sale of calves was a superb day for all attending with a cracking trade right throughout the day. Native calves were certainly good to sell today with a number of buyers forcing a strong trade for both bulls and heifers with bulls stopping at £380 and heifers to £330 both from the Griffiths family of Penistone.
Continental calves at Skipton are always hard fought over with today’s champion no exception. Shaun Sowray of Bishop Thornton presented the champion, a fantastic calf, 6 weeks old and by Brennand General went on to sell for £515 to Ian Ibbotson of Oakworth. British Blue bulls met a scintillating trade with Fred Houseman of Burton Leonard topping at £460 saw all of his 12 british blue bulls and heifers average £427.
Limousin’s were out in stronger numbers than previously seen with Bulls topping at £405 and averaging £388.75 with heifers topping at £380 which saw both top prices represented by Metcalfe’s of Brearton.
Black and white calves would average less on the week although two trailers of plain calves did hamper what was on a whole a strong trade for black and whites with no fewer than 8 different buyers competing for every type. Genuine 3 -5 week old calves were £75 -£110 all day long.
