3,044 Prime Sheep

In the sheep market there was larger entry of both Spring Lambs and Old Season lambs and the sale seeing 28 Springers levelling at 271.8p, whilst 2,713 Old Season saw an average of 190.55p (a fall of 4p on the week)

Spring Lambs were a dearer trade on the week and topped at 312.5p/kg for a pen of 3 Charollais from Charles & Valerie Marwood of Whenby, weighing 40kg selling for £125 each to Whiteheads Butchers in Edgeworth. Top of the shop was £135 for a pen of 51kg Charollais from Robert Towers of Farleton selling to Nick Dalby

Smart lambs were forward in larger numbers with additional runs of these presented for sale. Messrs Phillips of Burton Leonard had top price per head of £145 for a pen of 46kg Beltex crosses selling to Vivers Scotlamb. Messrs Phillips had furthers pens £125 £119 and £115 twice. Henry Atkinson had a run of Beltex crosses which topped at £119 for a pen of 26 Beltex at 45kg. Fox Farms topped with 40kg Beltex at £115. Messrs Phillips made 315.2p of a pen of 5 Beltex, whilst Paul Simpson made 300p of a pen of 20 Beltex (32kg at £96) and Henry Atkinson also had 300p for a pen of 15 Beltex (37kg £111). James Towler was close in too with 297.4p for a pen of 38kg Beltex

Commercial Lowland Lambs were cheaper on the week and back to prices seen 2 weeks ago, better end of export weights either side of 200p, the ordinary types 180p to 190p, although  Heavy Lowland lambs (46kg to 52kg) averaged the same as last week, but it was a two tier market, smart ones very good to sell but plainer sorts cheaper.

Hill bred lambs couldn’t maintain last weeks flyer and were quite a bit cheaper on the week, especially the Mules which saw the furthest fall, although Horned lambs, especially lightweights were a very similar trade.

Ewes saw a shortage of the very best heavy types today, but Mules were again good to sell with best end from late 70’s to early 80’s.
