A completely different story in the sheep market this week with the average price up by 15p/kg to stand at 156.5p/kg right through the sale. Handy weight lambs were a good trade and in best demand, as were the very smartest sorts with 2 extra buyers stood at the ringside today buying for wholesale and retail customers and the best end were regularly either side of £2. Heavy lambs also took a very good lift on the week, many of these selling either side of 150p/kg.
Today’s sale included the Monthly Prize Show of Lambs and judging was kindly undertaken by Mr Thomas Shepherdson. His choice as champions were a pen of Beltex crosses shown by Jonathan Townley of Nutta Farm, Clapham, weighing 39kg this pen of five were keenly sought after and secured by James Robertshaw, who along with sister Victoria, have recently opened the Keelham Farm Shop just off Gargrave Road in Skipton where the lambs will be on retail sale shortly. The reserve champions came from Frank & Robert Fielden of Todmorden, again weighing 39kg, they were secured for £89 each by Chris Hodgson purchasing on behalf of Kitson’s in Northallerton

Good show of calves for a non dairy day with 68 on offer. A few extra faces in the calf ring today with a strong trade throughout. Quality calves were on fire again with good continentals topping out at £570 and black and whites £260. Some top notch British Blues from Church Farm Enterprises, Richard Sutcliffe and Colin Whitelock taking the entry of 14 to an average of £481. Blue Heifers were a similar statement with Richard Shuttleworth helping the cause with an average of £400.83 for 6.
Angus’s and natives were in demand though in short supply with a strong bull from Richard Shuttleworth making £330 and George Fleetwood £260 with an Angus heifer.
Black and Whites sold well, today’s average of £116.89 for 38 calves shows the strength of the trade with a lot of Holstein bred calves nicely over £100. B&W’s topped at £260 for a Pure Friesian Bull from Richard Spence, Sutton.
Today’s continental calves averaged 38 days of age and Black and Whites averaged 27 days.
