CHRISTMAS SHOW
Judge Robert
Medcalf of J&E Medcalf & Sons, Halifax had no trouble in finding his
Champion Cast Cow from Richard & Wendy Maudsley, Rathmell, which was a pure
bred, 5 year old British Blue Cow weighing 845kg which joined livestock agent
Mr John Bowling for 193.5p or £1635. Reserve was Jeff Pickles of Chapel Le Dale
with a British Blue cross Cow which weighed 760kg and joined Robert Medcalf for
163.5p or £1243. Top price p/kg dairy was the first prize Dairy cast cow from
Mesrs G Pickersgill & Sons of Hawksworth which sold for 135.5p/kg to Dawn
Foods Ltd at Carnaby. A good show of fed cattle met a sharp trade.

Again a large show of sheep at Skipton attracted a big
ringside of customers with 15 separate
buyers stood at the ringside today
representing 27 different end users. The trade for lowland
lambs was generally a touch sharper
on the week, whilst Hill lambs were a shade easier, the
overall average showing a very
similar end result. Even with the vast show, todays’ sale was completed in a
little over 4 and half hours with the last ewe sold at 6:20pm. Best quality
sorts were good to sell as the Beltex average of 200p/kg shows whilst Texels
averaged a strong 165p. Heavy lambs generally around 150p to 160p with some
very heavy 55kg to 60kg at £85 to a top of £95, but it was the first cross
Continental export weights that were especially good to sell, 38/39kg well
fleshed at £63 to £67, 40/41kg at £64 to £68, 42/43kg at £68 to £73. Cast sheep
continue to recover in price and get dearer week by week.
NOTE
TO VENDORS: Most vendors are belly clipping lambs prior to sale which is to
your advantage as the majority of buyers now prefer them to be clipped. If you
are unable to do them at home prior to consigning sheep to market then take
advantage of Gordon Banks clipping service at the mart on the morning of sale.
If you wish to discuss this further please contact Ted Ogden at the Mart Office
