Still a little bit of trade for the right sorts of clean cattle with Jim Stockdale of JW Stockdale and Sons selling a 575kg Limousin cross heifer at £1463 or 254.5p/kg, also the days highest priced p/kg price to Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster. Top steer was £1395 for a 580kg Limousin cross from Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield which sold to Stanforths Butchers for 240.5p/kg.
A couple of outside fed Dairy heifers in the mix which distort the lightweight heifer average, otherwise the usual u grade type cattle were a similar trade.

Few heavy thick meated cows but a good ring full of buyers meant that cows got spread around quite widely and more could be sold even in the run up to Christmas when traditionally large factories switch over to clean cattle.

3,280 Prime Sheep comprising 2956 Prime Lambs & 324 Cast Ewes & Rams
Numbers remaining constant today with nearly 3000 lambs and a good show of 324 ewes too. Lamb trade easily upkept last weeks rates, some classes a touch dearer. This was the case with the smart end, with tops at 278p from Messrs Scrivin, Park House. George Sunderland of Cragg Vale was in the mix at 267.6p, Anthony Hewetson had pens at 266.7p and 241.7p, whilst James Garth & Son, Birk Knott had five pens from 265.9 to 241.5p, their trailer full of beltex lambs averaging 241.1p/kg. Messrs Hutchinson from Raven Hill topped the sale at £120 per head, these making 265.1p/kg. Beltex levelled at 225p across the board. The next grade of Continental handyweights were good to sell, nice ¾ types 200p-220p, commercials 180p to 200p.
Heavies upkept last weeks rates, with the smart Beltex Texel 47kg to 55kg types £100-£110, the nice skinned sorts in the £90’s, and good first crosses £83-£88.
Mule Lambs were dearer again on the week, more around £29-£32 over the weight, £75 to £80 for the good 44kg to 47kg. Swaledale/Dalesbred were a nice show with 150-160p the mark for nice lightweight wethers.

A quieter show of calves at CCM this morning following the Christmas Calf Show, however heady prices were still seen for the best of the calves today with Robert Metcalfe from Brearton topping at £420 for a lovely British Blue Heifer. A run of Continental stirks from A Twell & Co saw some healthy bidding reaching £650 twice for some Continental bullocks with a brace of Blue heifers at £600.

Craven Dairy Auction (58 head)
Brian Moorhouse takes the Christmas Dairy Championship once again with his 31 litre Grafeeti Daughter, which went on to sell for £2220 to John Howard of Heslaker. The next in line was a sweet pedigree heifer from David Lawson of Arthington boasting 5 generations of VG or Ex sold for £1800 to Brian Blezard of Ribchester.
A large show of youngstock met a fluctuating trade with incalf heifers arguably a straight trade considering the current industry circumstances, however a healthy ringside of buyers meant for a healthy trade. Chris Drake took home the Frank Wade Perpetual Trophy for his Incalf heifer (due to the Aberdeen Angus for Feb) she sold for £1010 to David Shuttleworth of Gargrave.
The J Ibbotson Trophy for best maiden went to Peter Baul of Bishop Thornton with an Overside Dragon daughter topping his trade at £800 selling to Messrs Ishmael of Orrell.
