MARKET REPORT - MONDAY 3RD JULY 2017

Forward: 80 Prime cattle comprising 31 Clean Cattle (under 30 mos), 6 Clean Cattle (over 30 mos) & 43 Cast Cattle. 2,208 Prime Sheep comprising 1,687 Spring Lambs, 60 Old Season Lambs and mature hoggs, 461 Cast Ewes & Rams. 75 Rearing Calves. 15 Dairy Cattle. 1 Loads of produce.




Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A very good show of cattle at the July Prime Show with the champion JM Townsend’s (Laneshawbridge) 540kg British Blue cross Heifer which sold to Keelham Farm Shop for 264.5p/kg or £1428. Reserve champion was a pure bred Limousin heifer weighing 535kgt consigned by Mesrs AA&E Critchley & Son from Hutton which sold to Jeff Burrow for 279.5p/kg or £1495.

Top price £ per head was a 580kg British Blue cross heifer sold by Jim Baines of Trawden which made 259.5p/kg or £1505 when selling to D&A Gregory&Son of Bacup.

2,208 Prime Sheep

Lambs were a better trade than anticipated with an overall average of 214p/kg looking a nice result on the day. Commercial Lambs with a bit more weight on board were keenly contested and would be 10p/kg dearer than the lighter commercial lambs (37kg-39kg). Better lambs generally 230p to 250p, top per kilo 263.4p/kg from Henry Atkinson, 263.1p from Rob Paisley, Ilkley, others at 261.p Henry Atkinson, 259.0p GA Hewitt & Son, Giggleswick,  256.5p JA Stoney & Son Pateley Bridge. Messrs Stoney also had the top price head of £118 selling to Countrystyle Meat of Lancaster. Ellis Bros £113.50, Rob Paisley £110.50, Henry Atkinson £110, George Wearmouth £110.
Today was the Monthly Prize Show and judging was carried out by Mr Nick Dalby. His Champions came from Michael Hewitt of Giggleswick selling for £101 to Hartshead Meat Co.

Rearing Calves to £460 (75)

Cracking show of Continental calves forward this morning with Geoff and Margaret Booth of Dowshaw Farm topping proceedings at £460, followed by £450 and £445 from the same home. Continental heifers were good to sell yet again with the Sowray Bros, Bishop Thornton topping at £400 with a lovely dark heifer at 29 days old.

 

Natives were a flyer also with Church Farm seeing their Angus bull calf hit £345 and a heifer to £300. Black and whites were very similar on the week with an average of £85.93 and calves topping at £155 for a well fleshed Friesian type from Paul and Janet Bolland of Dykelands

Craven Dairy Auction (15 head)

 A much improved trade this week with Arla’s price increase looking to be the main catalyst today. Richard and Andrew Walker of East Morton took the Championship this morning with a cracking home bred heifer that was calved 14 days giving 31 litres sold to Richard Sutcliffe of Queensbury for £2180.  The Reserve Champion picked out by Peter Sowray was presented by Wilson Stewart, Carlisle sold for £1880 selling to Richard Sutcliffe again.

 

1st Prize cow from DS&A Fort of Glusburn sold for £1920 to the Sowray Bros of Bishop Thornton. Incalf heifers presented by Robert Lambert of Milehouse sold to a fierce trade which were bid strongly to £1500 and £1440 respectively selling to Roger Naylor of Langbar.

 

Maiden heifers from R&E Pollard of Colne topped the section at £720 for a 11 month old Stirk.
