MARKET REPORT - MONDAY 3rd MARCH 2014

CCM Auctions held their weekly market at Skipton on Monday where the following numbers were forward for sale: 56 Prime cattle comprising 12 Clean Cattle (under 30 mos), 2 Clean Cattle (over 30 mos) & 42 Cast Cattle. 2,354 Prime Sheep comprising 1,998 Old Season Lambs, 356 Cast Ewes & Rams. 27 Rearing Calves. 11 Loads of produce.

 

 

Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Keelham Farm Shop came to the fore at this month’s show of Primestock  buying the Supreme Champion Beef animal a 555kg Limousin heifer consigned by Simon Bennett of Silsden Moor. The reserve champion was a 640kg Charolais cross steer also provided by Simon Bennett which joined Paul Binns of Rawson Market, Bradford for 200.5p/kg.

Cull Cow Prices

Trade for cast cattle creeping upward with dairies very nearly back at 110p on average. A few more Beef cows on offer the show and trade headed by an exceptional 7 year old Pure bred British Blue presented by Sheila Mason on behalf of JH&SM Mason of Keasden Head which tipped the scales at 935kg and made 186.5p/kg or £1744.

2,354 Prime Sheep

A very nice entry of sheep this week were generally dearer as the breed averages show, with Mule and Horned lambs all better to sell, especially the 44kg to 46kg Mule lambs which were all around £35- £37 over the weight. Horned lambs saw some nice 35kgs in the early mid £60’s per head, nice prime weight wthers at £30 to £33 over the weight. Commercial Suffolk & Continental export lambs generally 195p to 215p, with smart types a very dear trade, Beltex averaging 243p/kg. Heavy lambs were around £3-£5 per head dearer on the week. Cast sheep were keenly sought by a full ringside of customers, big Mule ewes selling at mid to late 70’s, Strong horned ewes well on in the 50’s and heavy Continental ewes into 3 figures. Overall cast sheep and ram average of £63.25

Rearing Calves to £390

B&W av £76 Cont av £301.42 Native av £209.20

All standards of calves good to sell with fit young calves making as good a trade as any. A 35 day old Friesian calf from John Blackwell, Gargrave making £152 and he was not the only one with a number of young calves easily making the market average. Continentals were a little short in number however a smart Limousin from Richard Spence reached the heights of £390 for a 1 ½ month old. Continental heifers were in fine fettle with all the blue heifers averaging £322.50.
