Prime Sheep

Skipton again came out on top with the sheep trade today moving up 6p/kg on the week to. A huge entry of 4500 lambs sold to average nearly 172p/kg across the board (SQQ 176.7p), a great result considering the increasing percentage of Mule & Horned lambs that are in the entry week on week.

Lowland lambs were good to sell. As ever the smart sorts regularly 220p to 250p. Tops were Frankland Farms Champion pen of 5 Beltex’s weighing 45kg selling at £128 each or 284.4p/kg to Keelham Farm Shop. Other notable prices were 268.9p 257.4p J&J Garnett, 267.9p 256.4p James Garth & Son, 264.9p F&R Fielden, 259.0p 252.5p DC Hall, 258.5p T&C Robinson, 250.0p RH&MR Ireland. A further 41 pens sold for in excess of 200p.

In the lump alongside Frankland Farms at £128, were £116 £105 S Currie, £106 T&C Robinson, £104.50 £104 £100 James Garth & Son, £101(x2) DC Hall, £100 RH&MR Ireland.

Generally a decent type of Continental lamb (40kg-45kg) was £32 to £36 over the weight, whilst commercial sorts around £30 over. This applied to heavy lambs as well which were much better to sell on the week, being £3 to £5 per head dearer. Handy weight lambs were a shade dearer on the week.

Mule Lambs were nice to sell as well with a lot of heavier types forward commanding around £25 over the weight.

Cast Ewes generally similar for meated types, but anything displaying too much fat was a shade easier.
