Prime Sheep

A larger show of lambs met with another solid trade and an overall selling average of 191p/kg, interesting to note this is 11p above the same week last year. The Monthly Prize Show of Lambs was kindly judged by Mr Jim Holden from Woodhead Bros Meat Co, and in a strong line up he found his champions in a pen of 5 Beltex crosses from Richard & Mark Ireland. Weighing 42kg they sold for £107 each or 254.8p to Vivers Scotlamb. Top call of the day was 265.1p (43kg @ £114) from Ellis Bros of Addingham Moorside, again purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. A further 13 pens sold for over 230p. Average for the Beltex Lambs was 220p.
Heavy lambs of all breeds found a good enquiry, the 45.5kg to 52kg range averaging £91.19 or 191p/kg. Top price of £112 again paid to Ellis Bros. In the Over 52kg range, Ian Marsden of Hoylandswaine, Penistone sold lambs to £117, purchased by J&E Medcalf Ltd, Halifax.
There were 1968 Texel lambs in the mix today averaging 190.9p/kg, whilst Mule lambs topped at 181p from Richard Caton and averaged 170p.
Lambs in the mid to late 30’s finding a ready market if well fleshed, but a few under finished pens finding some resistance.
