Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A reduced entry of retail cattle with less customers at the ringside in the run up to Christmas. Lack of retail numbers was made up by commercial steers sold from extensive systems.  Top gross came from Mesrs JW Stockdale&Sons of Burnsall whose 59okg Limousin Heifer sold to Kendalls Butchers of Pataley Bridge for £1443 or 244.5p/kg. Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster bought the top 3 pence per kg cattle all from Mesrs AA&E Critchley&Son of Hutton, all Limousin heifers weighing 500kg, 555kg and 500kg making 262.5p, 256.5p and 252.5p.

4,081 Prime Sheep

A great show of sheep today, not only because of the size of the show, but also the quality forward which was very good across all breeds with plenty of meat about and buyers responding well and producing an overall selling average of 185.5p/kg for 3,877 lambs sold. Beltex types and the smart Texels sold especially well, with 28 pens of lambs selling for in excess of 250p/kg and a breed average of 234.53p/kg for all Beltex sold was tremendous. Prices above £100 and 250p this week are too numerous to mention but cast your eye over the prices achieved below, top sale price was Mike Allen at £122 each and Paul Simpson at 276.9p per kilo. Mule and Masham lambs upkept last weeks improved rates, whilst Horned lambs were dearer again by between 5p and 10p/kg.

A better show of ewes saw heavier ewes again short of requirements and selling well, best horned ewes also a better trade on the week.

Craven Dairy Auction

A very successful Christmas show today with a cracking show of heifers and cows tied up down the shippon. Martyn Jennings of Cowling had the honour of judging and it was no easy task with a very strong line up of cattle turned out for judging. In the end it was a Larcrest Commander daughter out of a EX94 cow from Brian and Judith Moorhouse of Bell Busk which took the Craven Cattle Marts Perpetual Trophy, calved 12 days it went on to sell for £2200 to William Oldfield of Demense, Gisburn. The second prize heifer in class from David, Claire and Suzy Lawson of Arthington was again a Larcrest Commander daughter from one of their favourite cow families, she was calved 30 days and giving 35kg and went on to sell for £2350 to Stephen and Rachel Coates of Baildon.

The Reserve Champion from Thomas and Elizabeth Simpson of Red House Farm, Ripon, a tremdous home bred 2nd calver giving an incredible 48 litres sold for £2050 to Richard Sutcliffe of Queensbury, with another 2nd calver from the same home selling for £1780 to Brian Blezard of Ribchester.

Another Moorhouse heifer saw a flying trade, a 30 litre, 26 day calved heifer boasting 11 gens of VG or Ex behind her went on to sell for £2150 to regular supporter Brian Blezard of Ribchester. 3rd Prize in the pre-sale show from Edward Fort of the Silmoor herd saw his 26kg heifer sired by Crackholm Fever sold for £1920 to William Oldfield, Gisburn. The whole day was started with first man in the ring, Robert Crisp who sold his sweet 28 litre heifer for £1950 to Alf and Andrew Townsend of Southfield, Burnley.

Winning the Frank Wade Trophy for the best Incalf heifer was Peter Baul of Bishop Thornton with a heifer due to Sexed semen selling for £1320 to David Hancock of Cheshire.

A huge thank you also to our sponsors for their continued support: NMR, NFU and Yorkshire Bank.
