Tim Hamlet of Garstang backed his judgement and secured the Champion beast to which he had earlier awarded the first prize steer rosette. Consigned by the farming partnership of Mesrs AA&E Critchley&Son of Hutton the 540kg Limousin cross made 264.5p/kg (the leading steer price p/kg) or £1428. Top price was the Reserve champion a 500kg Limousin cross heifer also from the Critchley stable which sold to George Cropper of Baxenden for the leading p/kg price of 278.5p/kg or £1393. Top of the gross values was the 610kg British Blue cross steer from Mesrs CD&RF Kitching which made £1498 or 245.5p/kg when sold to Stanforths Butchers of Skipton. A compact show of cattle but plenty of choice in the way of retail cattle both in the type and at less than 550kg.

A light show of cast cattle a combined result of mowing, road closure and pre movement testing requirement for a key area at the start of June. Trade flew with top end of the fleshed dairies touching 140p/kg and an odd plain at 97.5p/kg with the rest in between a very strong price. A couple of non-farm assured Angus equally good to sell.

An increased show of sheep all round, and a nice trade too, especially for Spring Lambs which took a nice lift on the week. The show results are below, for which we thank James Dewhirst for judging this months show. His choice of champions came from Alex Brown of Tockholes, 5 tremendous Texel crosses selling to Hartshead Meat Co for £158 each. Other best lambs from £145 to £159 with JD&V Towers selling at £159 to A Atkinson and £153 to Hartshead Meat Co, ML Evans at £153 to Swaledale Foods, TA Robinson at £150 and D&L Coar at £149 both to Vivers Scotlamb, J&F Nutter and T Priestley both at £148 to Swaledale Foods, GH&G Emmott at £148 to J Penny & Son, Mark Evans at £148 to Kendalls Farm Butchers in Pateley Bridge and Harrogate, Frankland Farms at £146 to GJ Cropper. There were 11 other retail and wholesale buyers successful at the ringside as well today.
Hoggs were a mixed trade, and although there were some excellent prices for some smart and well fleshed types, a commercial type of hogg was a shade easier on the week. Mick Thwaite of Airton had hoggs up to £130, James Earnshaw £121, Hayley Baines £120, whilst William Hickson had a great pen of Mules at £118 or 218p.

32 calves through the door this morning however a full ringside of buyers made for a very healthy trade. Blue heifers would have the pick of the trade with 7 heifers over £400 and topping with a heifer from John Marshall of Dacre at £435. A strong turnout of continental bulls saw Martyn Jennings of Cowling saw all of his bulls reach past £450 and top at £470 with Church Farm Enterprises also at £450. Black and whites were a nice trade once again with some young calves easing the average however anything with a hint of flesh was well past the £100 mark.
