Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

On a day that is traditionally a bank holiday it would seem that the retail trade used the opportunity to escape the shop and replenish stocks of beef. Keelham Farm Shop of Skipton jointly headed up the gross prices with a 585kg Limousin cross heifer from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield at £1465 or 250.5p/kg, together with an identically priced and weighted Limousin cross heifer from RT&J Critchley&Sons which sold to George Cropper of Sandersons Butchers in Baxenden. Top price per kg in the heifers was another RT&J Critchley & Sons entry another Limousin at 560kg which sold to Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster (£1430).  Phil Gregory secured the two leading steers for his Bacup shop the top price per kg was a 550kg British Blue cross from RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton at 259.5p/kg or £1427 and 246.5p/kg for a 575kg British Blue cross from CD&RF Kitching.

There was a strong representation of butchers from west and north Yorkshire and across Lancashire with Countrystyle Meats Ltd of Lancaster the leading buyer accounting for 7 high quality entries.

Cull Cow Prices

A better show of cows with more heavy cows carrying flesh available and the plain worn cows at 80-95p an exceptional trade even with the big dairies at 115-120p/kg. A steaker type cow was once 110p/kg a price underpinned by grazing trade and the Beef crosses 140p+.

Prime Sheep

Spring Lambs again a nice trade with a strong demand from wholesalers and more butchers coming online as well today. Tops of £140 (43kg 325p) for Texels from TA Robinson, Dutton selling to George Cropper for Sandersons Butchers in Baxenden. Mark Evans made £134 per head and £132 per head.

Hoggs were a very mixed show, nice handyweights 220p to 250p tops at 253p form EP&JM Hutchinson, Faceby and commercial lowland handyweights 200p to 215p. Heavies a nice trade on the week, smarter end £110 to £120, Commercial types £98 to £108. A large percentage of the sale today were hill bred, better horned types 190p to 205p, Mules either side of £2.

All classes of ewes were again very good to sell. Lowland topping at £145.50 and mules to £108.50.

Rearing Calves to £425 (39)

First of all, a big thank you to all the farmers that took note and advice on bringing Calves in when asked to bring them in to maximise the trade! A flamboyant trade across the whole board for all Classes of Calves! With all Blue Bulls £300+ apart from 1! Blue Bulls came to an overall average of £358 and Blue Heifers coming to a top of £300 and averaging £245
Smaller Blue Bulls either side of £300 with Mediums either side of £380 and the best of the day upto £425 bearing in mind no massive calves was in the entry!
Medium Heifers £270-£300 with no large sorts in the entry!
Black and Whites topped at £145 averaging £81! No weaned sorts in the entry with all the Black and Whites still young sorts on milk!
Limi Bulls came to a top of £400 with a total breed average of £358!
Native Calves once again we’ll sort after with a Top of £340 for an Angus Bull!
