Mesrs AA&EE Critchley & Son of Hutton near Preston were both champions and the owners of the leading price at the June Show with a 535kg Limousin cross heifer which returns to Lancashire with Lancaster buyers Countrystyle Butchers. Reserve Champion was the first prize steer consigned by Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield, a 555kg British Blue cross which joined Countrystyle for 247.5p/kg or £1374.

Cast cows and bulls a very good trade. 56 of the 67 cast cows on offer dairy with heavy Black and Whites 120-130p, Some steakers as much as 122p and lean cows equally good to sell. Continental cross cows now 140p+ if farm assured and Natives with assurance 133.5p (J&AJ Preston & Son) for Aberdeen Angus and Longhorn 133.5p for W&M Bland. Mature bulls a sharper trade for the heavies 990kg for a Limousin for Mesrs AL Dean&Son, 148.5p/kg grossing £1470 but a 880kg British Blue from Martin Sharp pipped the p/kg at 159.5p or £1403.

Breeding Sheep
A much smaller show of 22 sheep and lambs, but trade was every bit as good with buyers still out in force looking for stock. Some mixed age Lleyn Ewes with strong lambs leading the singles prices at £140 the outfit, and £178 for Lleyn Sheep comprising both correct and broken mothed sheep with Twins.

The largest show of the season so far with 1,270 New Season Lambs in the entry selling to a top of £133 each, 319.5p/kg and averaging 256p or £102.56 per head. Today’s Monthly Show was judged by Mr Andrew Finch, Procurement Manager for Dunbia in Preston and there was a top quality entry put in front of him. His choice as champions were a pen of 39kg Beltex crosses from Neil Tattersall of York which were knocked down at £131 each or 319.5p/kg to Andrew Atkinson purchasing on behalf of Hartshead Meat Co in Mossley. The same purchaser also secured the reserve champion pen from William Shuttleworth of Rylstone whose 42kg pen sold for £123 each. Fox Farms had the third prize pen of Continentals weighing 37kg selling for £111 to Vivers Scotlamb. Mark Evans from Steeton had the first prize Suffolk crosses selling for £126 each to The Millstones Restaurant in Kettlesing. Outwith the show, John Robinson of Settle topped the sale at £133 with Texel crosses selling to David Palmer, closely followed by Ian & Stuart Barrett from Braisty Woods in Nidderdale with Texel crosses at £132 to Kendalls Farm Butchers of Harrogate & Pateley Bridge. Messrs Hall of Grassington sold Charollais crosses to £128 each purchased by Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster.
Gordon & Richard Crabtree of Clifton, Otley sold lambs to 305.1p/kg (39kg @ £119) whilst Neil Tattersall had a further pen at 300p and Fox Farms two pens at 300p.
Quite a few lots of lightweight lambs in the entry 33kg-35kg, but mainly 240-260p or £80-£88 so long as nice types, 32kg to 35kg bracket averaging £84.87.

Jeff Burrow had a pen of 7 Continental crosses weighing 52kg at £116, and another pen at £110 & £108. Keith Marshall of Niffany Farm topped £109 with Suffolk crosses.

Richard Spence of Sutton In Craven saw the best of the trade this morning with his Limousin Heifer calf selling for £470 to Mr Smith of Halifax, Mr Spence also topped proceedings in the bulls with his impressive bull reaching £430 selling to Tom Watson, Sawley.
Limousin Heifers were good to sell with three over £400 and blue heifers seeing a top of £385 for a straight calf from Johnny Moon. Natives were dearer again on the week with £295 for a good calf from Messrs Briggs, Guiseley with Natives right through averaging £242.

Craven Dairy Auction (18 head)
A cracking trade for milkers today with all selling to a strong trade, Mark Smith of Winterburn had the pick of the trade with his homebred heifer reaching £2020 to Mark Goodall of Tong with Brian Moorhouse watching his heifer also hit the £2,000 mark which headed to Ribchester with Brian Blezard.
Keith Downs watched his Champion set the tone for the day’s trade with the 3 week calved 30 litre heifer sailing to £1900 and going home with the judge Alf and Andrew Townsend of Southfield. Mark Stapleton of Addingham Moorside saw his reserve champion reach £1950 for a heifer that he bought in as a youngster from Skipton and ended up as the second purchase of the day for Mark Goodall.
Youngstock sold by James Kayley of Halton West met some stiff bidding with the best bulling heifer reaching £850 with all three selling to the Sowray family of Bishop Thornton for an average of £800. Alan and Susan Throup of Higher House then sold 3 Heifer calves from their pedigree Dalesbrad herd averaging £403.3 and topping at £420.
