Monthly Show

Champion at the October Prime Show was a 620kg Limousin cross heifer shown by Amy Bradley of Pateley Bridge which after a summer on the show circuit was snapped up for 299.5p/kg or £1857 by Anthony Kitson for his shops in Northallerton and Yarm. Originally acquired for sale at the Company’s Christmas Primestock Show on Sunday 29^th November the heifer was bred locally by Trevor Stoney of Bewerley. Reserve was a 520kg Limousin cross steer consigned by Malcolm Metcalfe of Baldersby which sold to Keelham farm Shop for 276.5p/kg or £1438.

A much better trade than anticipated today given the lows of late last week in some places. Numbers were tight countrywide in the morning at that led to stronger demand at our afternoon sale, resulting in some an average of just shy of 150p, 5p up on the week, and a rise of 10-15p/kg from the morning markets. Smart lambs would be around £5 dearer than last week 200p to 210p not an uncommon price for the good stuff, up to 248p or £102 each for the champion pen of lambs from T&C Robinson purchased by Andrew Atkinson for Hartshead Meats.

Commercial lambs were also a sharper trade than last week, especially the heavy lambs which would see a healthy rise on the week.

A lesser show of calves today on this miserable Monday morning, black and whites  were perkier than expected with the 20 on offer averaging £96.35. Continentals were a touch easier with top end calves absent today however John Blackwell and Robert Metcalfe, Brearton both managed to hit £400 with David Holmes and John Wright taking £395 each. Some young native calves would draw natives under a £200 average for along time.
