Keelham Farm Shop of Skipton set about putting the very best of beef on to tables in Craven when buying both Champion and Reserve at the October Primestock Show. The judge John Mellin found his champion, a British Blue cross heifer in the pen of David Bailey from Long Lee and the 470kg entry sold to the Skipton shop for 276.5p/kg or £1244. A copper behind in the top prices at 275.5p/kg was the Reserve Champion from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield a 545kg British Blue cross heifer which went to Keelham Farm shop for a gross value of £1501. The leading gross price saw two new names (in recent months) at the top in F&M Shepherd of Greenhow whose 620kg Limousin cross heifer sold to a new buyer in G Harrison of Preston for £1683 or 271.5p/kg. In the steers the top gross was £1673 for Bill Cowperthwaite’s 630kg Limousin cross steer which sold to Mick Etherington for 265.5p/kg. Trade for clean cattle is unrelenting and more cattle are required to fulfil orders.

4,183 Prime Sheep comprising 3,652 Prime Lambs, & 531 Cast Ewes & Rams
Another good day at CCM Skipton with the overall average levelling at 201.5p (202.7p last week), and with a very similar total entry penned of 3652 head of lambs, just 66 head less on the week. However, the smart goods were very good to sell today, and handy weights of all breeds too, with both classes of lamb being dearer on the week. But the heavier lambs were cheaper on the week.
Today we held our Monthly Show, with judging carried out by Mr Mick Etherington, who gave the awards as listed below. However it was the Reserve Champion pen of 5 lambs that took top price per head on the day of £155.50 per head, when the 46kg Beltex from George Sunderland of Cragg Vale sold at 338p/kg to Vivers Scotlamb.
A&G Midgley of Luddendenfoot had the Supreme Champion pen and they made the top per kilo price at 362p when their 40kg Beltex crosses made £145 each. Jonathan Townley from Clapham made £147.50 (343p) of 5 Beltex at 43kg, D&A Livestock, Harrogate made £145.50 (323p) of 45 Beltex. All three pens sold to SA Swales for Knavesmire Butchers in York.
Others in the £140s were Ellis Bros, Addingham 44kg £144.50 (328p), G Sunderland, Cragg Vale 47kg £143.50 (305p), and A&K Kiernan, St Michaels with two pens of 47kg both at £140 each (298p). All four pens sold to Vivers Scotlamb.
Several more pens achieved 300p, RH&MR Ireland of Whalley made 306p (41kg £125.50), A&K Kiernan made 300p (43kg £129), whilst Nick & Charlotte Brown, Claughton made a good journey to Skipton making 300p twice with 40kg £120 and 38kg £114.
As stated, the commercial heavy lambs were cheaper on the week, but commercial and prime quality handier weighted lambs bucked that trend and were good to sell with several buyers keen for any breed 36kg to 40kg so long as they were well finished.
Mule lambs would be a shade harder to sell on the week, with 180p/185p a common price area for the increasing quantity on offer. Horned lambs though saw nice wethers in high demand again, good 35kg/37kg around 175p, with tups less.
Cull Ewes selling better than expected with prices not as dear towards the end of last week. Over 500 in the entry with a lot of grazing ewes forward and medium weight continentals. Big heavier mules would be slightly less money on the week with best not quite reaching £90 but still mid £80’s and some lean meat ewes carrying flesh in the £70’s whilst grazing Mules could be picked up 50’s and 60’s. Big Texel ewes upto £134.50 and Texel tups selling to £139.50. Medium continentals and heavies sold well with pures £100+ and heavy pure breds £120+ whilst first cross heavies around the £115-£120 and smaller weight ewes £90-£100. Beltex ewes also sold to £138.50. Plain grazing ewes in the 50’s and 60’s with some smaller goods less but in general all selling very well with more grazing orders for continental ewes about this week. Lean and Plain Swale ewes sold dearer on the week with meat ewes all swales selling above £25 including small plain ewes. Medium meat ewes £35-£45 and good meat ewes up-to £53.50.
