Prime Lamb Show
A great show of 5,782 sheep comprising 5,061 Prime Lambs and 721 Cast sheep, being the largest show of the season so far, and they met with the anticipated better trade, especially for the heavy lambs and those well fleshed.
The Monthly prize show was held and the awards given by the Judge Paul Watson are listed below, and it was Richard & Mark Ireland that took championship honours with a pen of 39kg Texels selling for £97 to the Judge. Reserve Champions were a pen of Mule Wethers from Bernard Simpson weighing 46kg selling for £86 to Andrew Atkinson. However, It was Trevor & Clive Robinson that topped the sale with a pen of 49kg lambs selling £120 each to Nick Dalby. Bill Logan from Stainforth was next up with a pen of 46kg Beltex at £118 each to Vivers Scotlamb. Richard Simpson from Pateley Bridge had 50kg Texels make £114 purchased By Kendalls Butchers of Pateley Bridge. Ellis Bros of Addinghm Moorside made £110 each of a pen of 44kg Beltex to Vivers Scotlamb. George Sunderland of Hebden Bridge made £105 of 45kg Beltex to Thomas Shepherdson and £104 of 43kg to Vivers Scotlamb. T&C Robinson were n the prices again with 42kg at £104 to Hartshead Meats, Taylor Bros were also up at £104 with 44kg’s to Vivers Scotlamb, Whilst Richard & Mark Ireland also made £104 of 46kg’s to Kendalls Butchers.
Generally lambs would be £6 to £10 up on the week depending upon quality and weight, but it was the well fleshed types with some weight up that were the keenly contested and best to sell.
Hill bred lambs also got a good following with best Mule Lambs £35 to £40 over the weight. Frank Throup had the top price Mules at 190p (40kg £76), whilst Kevin Marsall of Dacre had top price at £94.50, followed by Peter Houseman of Padside at £90 and WA&A Booth of Feizor £88 for 48kg.
It was another good day for Anthony Hewetson who sold his first ever draw of Swaledale Wethers from Sandford Farm weighing 39kg they made £73 each. Other meated hill bred lambs also sold well. A large show of cast & feeding sheep bucked the trend seen elsewhere of lower prices to maintain recent trade.

The 5th September calf show began with Sowray Bros of Bishop Thornton winning the Pre-Sale Show with his British Blue Bull calf and also took reserve with their second prized bull. A strong turnout for the September Calf show with 129 through the ring, as usual the Continental bulls and heifers were a strong trade but also at a strong average were the Natives with Hereford calves particularly good to sell with the top at £310 from FA Holmes & Son, Castley and heifers to £285 from JM Smith & Son, Carleton. Aberdeen Angus calves also at a fair trade today with David Lawson of Arthington topping bulls and heifers at £305 and £250 respectively.
Alan from Hartley’s at Bolton Abbey turned up with a tremendous run of calves and took a worthy third prize with his bull topping at £410 and his Friesian bull at £160 with only Richard Spence of Sutton in Craven topping this with his Friesian bull at £190.
