A much larger show of lambs today and a decent trade as well, with a lot more hill bred lambs getting into the entry and the lowland lambs saw a large amount of 47kg plus weights, but an overall average of 168p looks a very good result.
The Monthly Show brought out some good lambs, and the prizes awarded by our judge for the day, Mr Martin McIntyre of Bainbridge, are listed below. His Champions were a pen of Beltex crosses from Michael Thwaite of Crakemoor, Airton, selling for the 2nd joint highest price of day at £121 each (46kg @ 263p/kg) to Country Style Meats of Lancaster. Rob Lambert of Wigglesworth topped the sale though with a tremendous pen of 5 Beltex crosses selling for £145 each (40kg @ 362.5p/kg) to SA Swales for Knavesmire Butchers in York. Henry Atkinson form Kettlesing had a great run of lambs today, his best pen weighting 37kg and selling for £121 each or 327p/kg. However this was beaten at 342.9p/kg by another pen from Rob Lambert when his pen of 5 Beltex weighing 35kg sold for £120. Other prices per head were Ian & Mary Lancaster from Clitheroe £118, Mick Hewitt from Giggleswick £118, Henry Atkinson from Kettlesing £115, JM Andrews from Thirsk £114, John Eddleston from Great Harwood £111, Henry Atkinson £110, Mike Allen from Staithes £110, Nick Capstick from Bolton by Bowland £110. Other leading prices per kilo were 292p from John Eddleston, Henry Atkinson 290.9p (33kg@£96) 280p and 277p, JM Andrews 281.6p K Saffrey 265.5p. Overall Beltex Lambs averaged 228p/kg.
Commercial Continental lambs were generally a much heavier selection than last week, with one third of the sale entry today scaling 46kg or more, and this weight range although not a dear on paper as last week, still got away well at 165p average.
Hill bred lambs were forward in much larger numbers, a well presented Mule lamb at a handy weight of 40kg to 43kg were around 160p to 165p, best from Steve Dorey at 169.2p.
Horned lambs were forward in much larger numbers on the week, although prime weighted wethers 150p to 155p, tups and lightweights were less money

100 Calves through the door this morning with a cracking show of continental calves, with some good numbers consigned from JR & MJ Moon Wigglesworth, A Sowray & Son Harrogate, C&M Hall Huddersfield, GT Booth Lothersdale and MP Jennings, Cowling. The 39 British Blue bulls saw well reared calves on the end of some fierce bidding with 9 over £400 and 23 over £350 for the genuine 4-8wk old bull calves we had on offer.
British Blue heifers were also flying off the shelves with an average of £345.45 and topping at £400 for a nice dark heifer from Shaun and Peter Sowray, with10 others over £330.
On average a young show of black and white calves today but prices were good yet again with shiny, well fleshed black and white calves regularly into £75 to £100 with a 3 week old Friesian from Michael Heron of Bramhope topping the trade at £115.
Keep the strong numbers coming, with more and more buyers wishing to buy TB4 and TB1 Low Risk well reared calves. For Info on calf sales ring Sam Bradley 07538539077
