Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)
A nice entry of cattle for a Bank Holiday Monday and the May Prize Sale. Judging was in the hands of Martin Brown and his awards saw The Kitching Family of Threshfield awarded Championship honours with a 570kg Limousin Heifer which later sold for 281.5p or £1604 to Keelham Farm Shop Skipton. Keelham took 2 other prize winners from Messrs Kitching, 2nd Prize Heifer 580kg 255.5p £1481 and 1st prize Bullock 570kg 250.5p £1427. Keelham had 7 purchases altogether and included the second prize bullock from Messrs Critchley Preston 525kg 254.5p £1336. Other retail purchases included Stanforth Butchers Skipton with a 580kg heifer 241.5p £1400 from Messrs Critchley amongst their two purchases whilst GJ Cropper Baxenden purchased 2 heifers for his Sandersons Butchers shop including a sweet 555kg heifer at 251.5p £1395.
Cows were a sharp trade, better black and whites either side of 120p, middle of the road out of parlour types 100p to 110p and just a couple of plain lasses in the 80’s.

1498 Prime Sheep
A reasonable show for a bank holiday Monday and a straight trade all round. Champion pair of Spring lambs being snapped up by Kitson & Sons, who made several other purchases on the day. Consigned by Dave and Laura Coar, Darwen they weighed 43kg and made £120 each. John Nutter from Hurst Green had a run od good heavy lambs and they caught the eye of Andrew Atkinson purchasing for Hartshead Meat Co in Mossley when his 48kg Suffolk crosses sold for £126. Top price per kilo was Fox Farms from Clitheroe at 185p selling to Yorkshire Halal Meat Co.
Hoggs were a very end of season type affair, the better fed sorts still commanding good prices, best at 266p on two occasions from Nick Capstick Bolton by Bowland, both pens purchased by Yorkshire Halal Meat Co. The same vendor also made 255p and 251p with Stephen Pepper making 245p and 243p. Top price hoggs were Beltex crosses making £120 per head from Hywell Williams Llandadog purchased by Kendall Farm Butchers, whilst Stephen Pepper made £118 to Hartshead Meat Co. P Hargreaves Barrowford made £116 whilst Rob Bailes Aldborough had a great run including 3 pens at £115 then £114.50 and another at £114, John Wood Trawden made £115, and EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby matched them at £115.
Cast Sheep were a decent show, several pens of strong Ewes £100 to £125, other decent Lowland Ewes in the 90’s. Decent horned ewes making in the 50’s and £60’s.

Blues into top gear again today with Brian Wellock presenting a tremendous blue bull on behalf of his son James of Seat House Farm, Eshton which sold for the sale high of £445 and is on it’s way to hull. A run of cracking blues from Joss Lancaster of Horton in Craven sold to £430 three times, £425, £400 and £395 and also topping the heifers at £330. Right through blue bulls were good to sell with a section average of £383.75. Blue heifers not quite as potent today with a show not just the standard of last fortnight despite this plenty faces were present to produce a respectable average of £255.88.
A good show of black and white calves today with some nice runs of well fleshed calves seeing a very healthy average of £101.5 topping for a strapping bull from John & James Dugdale of Settle at £165 with a Pure Friesian from Richard Spence of Sutton In Craven at £135. Aberdeen Angus calves found a ready audience today with heifers flying off the shelves with an average of £197.5.

2756 Breeding Sheep
A busy day in the main ring today 2756 Breeding Sheep through the ring commencing with 1065 Geld Gimmer Hoggs which sold to a good trade throughout and in front of many people’s expectations. Topping the day was a pen of cracking Beltex hoggs from Hywell Williams of LLanddeusant which sold for £185 with Donald Sunderland of Halton East topping the Mule hoggs at £148.
The tremendous show of hoggs and lambs found a ready audience from start to finish. Despite trade back slightly on last year the trade was buoyant throughout peaking with a pen of Beltex Hoggs with Beltex lambs from Steve Buckley of Doveholes, Derbyshire at £245. The impressive annual run from the Stapleton family of Skipton peaked at £240 for their usual quality run of texel hoggs with beltex lambs. For the first time, this year white faced hoggs and lambs out numbered Mule hoggs with lambs and forged an impressive trade with Texel X and Beltex X hoggs with Lambs averaging just shy of £195.
The best of the Mule Hoggs with Lambs again came from the Johnson Family of Felliscliffe which peaked at £205 for the first prize pen producing a strong average of £181 per outfit for their entire run. Malcolm Gratton of Warsill wasn’t far behind with high of £195 and an average of £179 with plenty of commercial type hoggs selling £160 - £170.
Another good show of Ewes and Lambs expected next week with circa 500 outfits expected with entries closing Friday.
