The Critchley’s champion was a 595kg Limousin cross heifer which made 268.5p/kg or £1598 and their second prize heifer was again a 540kg Limousin which made 252.5p/kg or £1364. Top price on the day was a 505kg Blonde cross heifer consigned by Bill Cowperthwaite of Malham Moor which made 289.5p/kg or £1462 when selling to George Cropper. First prize steer and leading priced steer was also presented by Mers AA&E Critchley, a Limousin cross weighing 615kg which sold to Mesrs J&E Medcalf of Halifax for 246.5p/kg or £1516. 12 retail butchers present and an excellent of entry of high quality cattle met a very good trade.

Prime Sheep

Plenty of sheep forward for sale today, with 4,393 sheep penned for sale, and a good trade to go with it, lambs 4p up on the week to level at 174.63p/kg. A great show of smart lambs met with strong bidding, the champion lambs sold for £118 each, consigned by T&C Robinson of Tosside, selling to Keelham Farmshop, whilst Richard & Mark Ireland’s Reserve Champion pen sold for the leading price on the day £122 each to Hamlets Butchers of Garstang. Outwith the prize winners, Tom Walmsley sold lambs at £115 each to Kendalls Farm Butchers of Pateley Bridge and Harrogate, whilst the same buyers purchased lambs from Ralph & Val Crabtree of Low Snowden for £109 each. Vivers were in good form, buying lambs from Henry Atkinson, Kettlesing at £108, Cecil Hutchinson, Kirkby Wiske £106, Thomas Fall, Middleham £104, and Michael Hall, Scosthrop £102. Mike Allen of Staithes sold lambs to £101 purchased by Hartshead Meat Co.
Per kilo prices saw Messrs Ireland at 297p to Hamlets Butchers, T&C Robinson 281p to Keelham Farmshop, Cecil Hutchinson 272p to Vivers, Henry Atkinson 270p, George Sunderland 256p, Thomas Fall 253p, Thomas Walmsley 250p.
Smart lambs were the best trade for several weeks, and best end continued to sell well with a long list over 230p. Nice lambs found a stronger trade, plenty of nice continentals at 190p to 210p, commercial sorts 170p to 190p.
Hill Lambs took another nice step up trade, Mules again rising in value on the week, and good Horned Wethers in the 150p to 160p region.
Cast sheep were a large show and generally maintained last weeks trade.

A handy trade for calves today with an exceptional calf from Hartley’s at Bolton Abbey topping the proceedings at £480. Overall calves were a touch dearer with black and whites averaging £64.59, native calves again good to sell with seasonal buyers forcing the trade which helped to push Graham Hayton’s Aberdeen Angus steer calves to £450.

Andrew Townsend did the honours in the judging ring today and he was right on the money. 1st Prize and Champion went to a cracking heifer from Robert Crisp of Calton, Malhamdale. The homebred heifer giving 28 litres sold for £2100 to the judge. Georgie Fort presented the reserve champion heifer, Hawbank Ballisto Buttergill that was calved 18 days and giving 30kg sold for £2050 to William Oldfield of Gisburn.

Commercial trade was not quite as rosy as a fortnight ago but handy heifers were still selling away nicely with Tony Swires selling a couple of handy heifers at £1700 and £1650 with another of Robert Crisps at £1680. Newly calven cows were in short supply however Ian Parkinson of Barden found his 2nd calver selling to £1780 to Richard Sutcliffe of Queensbury.
