Craven Cattle Marts Ltd conducted their Christmas Show & Sale for Lowland Prime Lambs today where in total there was a super entry of 3900 lambs and nearly 400 ewes forward for sale, including 41 pens of lambs in the show. The overall average for every lamb sold was up 3p/kg this week at 225.2p/kg, whilst for comparison the SQQ (upto 45.5kg) was 229.3p/kg.
The standard of Lambs in the show was excellent, creating a very hard job for our experienced show judge Mr Anthony Swales of Knavesmire Butchers in York who gave extreme consideration to every pen that was entered. Mr Swales choice as the Supreme Champions came from the trimmed section when a pen of 35kg Beltex crosses from Calderdale lamb producer John Midgley of Dean House Farm in Luddendenfoot caught his eye and were awarded the ES Hartley Trophy and champion rosette. The lambs entered the sale ring and were keenly contested, but the successful bid of £360 each (1,028p/kg) came from Clare Cropper, and the lambs will be on sale in Croppers Butchers, Farm Shop & Deli in Accrington, Lancashire.
The reserve champions came from Anthony & Emma Thompson of Foulridge, well known for producing quality show lambs it was no surprise they appeared amongst the prizes. Weighing 38kg, the Beltex crosses made £180 each and sold to the judge where they will be on offer in Knavesmire Butchers in York.
Local butchers, farmshops and wholesalers were keen supporters as usual at this fixture, with Robertshaws of Thornton securing the 1st Prize pen of Down cross Lambs at £119 each from RKR Wood of Stokesley. Knavesmire Butchers purchased the first prize pen of untrimmed continentals from Tim Robinson of Longridge, weighing 42kg they sold for £165.
Hartshead Meat Co in Mossley the other prize winning continentals at £158 (43kg) from RH&MR Ireland of Whalley, £152 (44kg) from Hayley Baines of Horton in Craven and £150 (41kg).
The general trade on the day again saw handyweight lambs very good to sell to sell again today, with 37kg to 42kg nice Continentals dearer on the week, whilst 43kg to 46kg were similar on the week. Heavier Lowland lambs were good to sell as well with weight averages showing a slight increase.
