MARKET REPORT - MONDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2019

Forward: 38 Prime cattle comprising 15 Clean Cattle (under 30 mos), 2 Clean Cattle (over 30 mos) & 21 Cast Cattle. 3,661 Prime Sheep comprising 3201 Prime Lamb, 460 Cast Ewes & Rams. 42 Rearing Calves. 2 Loads of produce.

 






Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Phil Gregory of DA Gregory &Son were in attendance at the October Prime Show to secure the very best for their Bacup shop in the Supreme Champion, a 600kg Limousin cross heifer which had been shown all summer by the Jowett family of Queensbury, £1587 or 264.5p/kg. Gregory’s also secured the reserve a 575kg British Blue heifer from the weekly consignment of RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton which made the leading p/kg price of 270.5p and grossed at £1555. Plenty of retail customers at the ringside ensured that a very good show of cattle met a very good trade. Increased weight in the steers which included a couple of grass fed bullocks 4 av.613kg av. price £1182. Heifers 11 av. wt. 547kg av. price £1378. Leading buyer in terms of quantity was Keelham Farm Shop of Skipton closely followed by DA Gregory&Sons, Countrystyle Meats Ltd, Lancaster, Robertshaws Farm Shop, Thornton, Ellisons Butchers, Cullingworth, and Stanforths Butchers, Skipton.

Cull Cow Prices

Cast cows were a sharp trade. A few young cows on offer today meant the top of the dairies at 126.6p for Wood Bros whilst meated heavy dairies were in the same slot of 105-110p. An occasional plain cow in the 70s but most in the 80s in this category. Steaking cows were 95p.

3,661 Prime Sheep
comprising 3201 Prime Lamb, 460 Cast Ewes & Rams

As predicted, sheep were a much sharper trade on the week, with fed lambs receiving a strong enquiry from the full contingent of buyers ringside. George Sunderland of Sykes Gate took the championship rosette awarded by Judge Paul Watson at this months prize show and sale. They weighed 45kg and sold at £106 each to Vivers Scotlamb. Top price on the day was £111 paid to N&AD Boynton Ripon for Beltex purchased by Hartshead Meat Co, whilst D&A Livestock made £110 each selling to Kitson and Sons Butchers of Yarm. Richard and Mark Ireland had a strong run of lambs topping at £108 to Kendalls Farm Butchers in Pateley Bridge and Harrogate who also purchased lambs at £107 from D&A Livestock in Haverah Park. Ellis Bros had a great consignment of lambs topping at £106 to Vivers Scotlamb, who also bought a second pen at £106 from George Sunderland. John and Rob Marshall of Dacre sold two pens of lambs both at £106 to Kendalls Farm Butchers. Brayton Farmshop near Selby secured lambs at £104 each from N&AD Boynton. Top price per kilo was 245p for Beltex from JG Hall & Son Gargrae to Vivers Scotlamb. Lowland lambs that have been creep fed received a good enquiry, handyweights 180-190, smarter goods £2 plus, heavies generally 170p, smarter sorts 180-190p.
Hill bred lambs were better to sell, strong Mules to £77.50 JR Taylor & Son and also £77.50 and £77 from AJ Mason, £77 JH Throup, whilst per kilo the top price was 155.8p/kg from P&SN Smith & Sons, Lofthouse and others at 154.4p from JH Throup Silsden Moor and 152p AJ Mason. Horned lambs were in larger number, and as requested were generally well fleshed lambs weighing 34kg to 37kg selling from £48 to £53, up to £54 from Sheila Mason Keasden Head.

Cast Sheep were a larger show and heavier types would be better to sell, whilst lightweight ewes were a similar trade.

Rearing Calves to £335 (42)

With the big show of calves last week a nice number of calves forward this week. Aberdeen Angus Bulls topped at £330 from Mr E.J Fort. The sale consisted of a third of them being black and whites topping at £105. Rearing Black and Whites calves selling very well, with the second-rate Black and Whites making either side of £40 with some younger calves less.

Best Blues over the £300 mark and the next grade of Blues making £220-£260.
