Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A nice show of clean cattle with Tim Hamlet of Hamlets Butchers in Garstang securing the top gross and highest priced p/kg, a 580kg British Blue cross heifer from James Drake of Denholme which sold for 256.5p/kg or £1488. The second best gross at £1439 was a 570kg Limousin cross heifer from Mesrs RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton which sold to Keelham Farm Shop, Skipton for 252.5p/kg. Highest priced steer was a 530kg Limousin cross steer which made 239.5p/kg when sold by RT&J Critchley&Son to Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster.

Cull Cow Prices

Increased number of cast cattle including plenty of meat and weight in the dairies. The heavy cows were a good trade 120p + the target price and the heavy cows now £1000 and upwards. Steaking cows and plains very expensive although less spark about the super lightweight dairy breeds.

5,065 Prime Sheep (comprising 58 Spring Lambs 4,706 Prime Hoggs & 301 Cast Ewes & Rams)

 

A tremendously busy prime sheep market for the second week of April with over 5,000 head penned and sold. 58 Spring Lambs were a mixed show with quite a lot of heavy first draw lambs types in the entry, but price wise making either side of £120 per head. The handy weight lambs 250p to 310p, top price 310.5p from David Hall of Coniston Cold and £127 from Charles Marwood. Next week is the Easter Show & Sale, classes for pairs and singles.
A huge show of 4706 Hoggs were good to sell, handyweights finding a very keen ringside of buyers, and a large show of heavy hoggs seeing prices rise on the week. The nice Beltex types 250p to 300p, but a straight export lamb was 230p to 250p, commercial sorts 225. Handy weight hill bred hoggs finding favour, good 43kg 44kg Mules £90-£95, better pens of 42kg 44kg Scotch Blackfaced £90-£94 and 40s at £88.50.
Heavy sheep had better quality 52kg to 58kg at £115-£120, nice sorts £105-£114 and commercials either side of £100.

Rearing Calves to £425 (44)

A handy show of calves this morning with certainly more interest ringside this week. British Blues once again to the fore with Daniel Lancaster topping at £425 with a cracking bull with church farm enterprises not far behind at £415 and £410 creating a helathy average of £338. Limousin calves from Hayton Stocks found a good gear also finding new homes at £390 and £340 for a bull and a heifer.

 

Blue heifers despite looking less on paper were actually a half decent trade for calves entered. Straight heifers to £300 with plenty smaller and younger heifers £230 - £270.

 

Natives were in demand with both heifers and bulls finding good bidding, best bull from Chris Drake, Thornton sold to £250 with his heifer also making good money at £160.

 

NB: Good show of calves expected next week with a consignment of 14 BB Bulls and Heifers already booked in.

Craven Dairy Auction (2 head)

 Just a brace of milker’s for today’s Dairy Sale with a handy 2nd Calver from Sally Wellock giving 32kg and calved 7 days selling for £1500 to Hartley’s of Bolton Abbey. A thick Friesian heifer from Jon Midgeley giving 24kg found a straight price at £1080 selling to John Howard, Heslaker.

 

NB: Next Sale 29th April includes the Spring Sale of Bulls and Youngstock with the possibility of a good run of dispersal cows aswell.
