4,111 Head comp: 3,605 Prime Lambs & 506 Cast Sheep

A total entry of over 4,100 sheep had as part of it aa larger show of lambs this week with over 3,600 presented for sale, an increase of 568 head on the week, and the overall average up 4.7p/kg on the week to stand at 192.9p/kg, or £80.78 per head. Texel’s made up the main part of the show with 2856 Texels av 195.26p/kg.
The top price per head was £111 each on two occasions, the first for a pen of 49kg Texel Beltex crosses  consigned by Richard & Sadie Crabtree of Clifton, Otley purchased by Andrew Atkinson for Hartshead Meats of Mossley. Richard & Sadie had 4 further pens at £107 £106 £101 and £100. The second consigned from Duncan Halliday of Sowerby Bridge whose 48kg Texel’s were purchased by Nick Dalby for Kendalls Farm Butchers. Alf & Andrew Townsend of Southfield near Burnley made £108, F Long from Grewelthorpe made £101 of Texels, and three vendors at £100 were Frank & Robert Fielden, Charles & Richard Kitching and Norman Walker.
It was Richard and Sadie Crabtree that had top price per kilo at 246.3p (41kg at £101) purchased by Vivers Scotlamb.
Like last week, well fleshed lambs 41kg to 44kg were in strongest demand, the smart goods 220p to 240p, nice sorts 200p to 215p, commercial sorts 190p to 200p. Good heavy lambs were also a decent trade, the 46kg to 52kg bracket averaging 193p. A good Mule wether 42-44kg was top side of 180p, lighter ones in the 170’s.
Cast sheep were generally a stronger trade averaging £61 per head, but bearing in mind 2/5th’s of the entry were horned ewes represents  good result.

Rearing Calves to £500 (127)

Real show of calves today with 127 landing on the docks this morning and a healthy trade to boot, British Blues headlined the very top prices with Church Farm Enteprises taking the top four highest prices with some tremendous calves which topped at £500, 490 x2 and £475. Geoff and Margaret Booth of Lothersdale were not far behind at £475 and Shaun Sowray at £470.

 

Black and whites saw an easier trade with a lot of younger calves tempering the trade today. Best sorts well past £100 and topped with a well fleshed Friesian sort at £180. Limousin’s topped by Sowrays at £395 were well fought over with genuine 3 week old bulls well into the £300’s.

 

Natives were into a high gear again today with Angus Bulls averaging £265 and a packet of Lincoln Red cross heifers from David and Pauline Brown of Ramsgill averaging £258.

 

Calves today averaged 27 days of age right through the sale.
