Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Another high-quality entry of clean cattle at the weekly sale and no let up in the trade. The Farm shops of Robertshaws at Thornton, Keelham at Skipton and Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster were in the hunt for stock as trade settles into usual seasonal demand and the possibility that demand may improve as people return to work. Charles and Richard Kitching of Threshfield headed up the top gross priced steer and heifer both making £1407, their steer a Limousin cross weighing 600kg selling at 234.5p/kg to J&E Medcalf of Halifax and their 580kg Limousin cross heifer selling to Robertshaws Farm Shop at Thornton for 242.5p/kg. Mesrs Kitching also achieved the third highest priced animal by weight at 247.5p/kg, a 565kg blonde cross heifer which sold to Keelham Farm Shop of Skipton. The same buyer also bought the leading priced steer a 560kg Limousin cross from F&B Smith of Masongill for 243.5p/kg or £1364. The leading price per kg was a 520kg Limousin cross heifer consigned by RT&J Critchley&Sons of Preston which sold to Countrystyle Meats Ltd of Lancaster for 248.5p/kg or £1292.

2,106 Prime Sheep comprising 1731 Spring Lambs, 128 Prime Hoggs inc 30 Mature Sheep, 247 Cast Ewes & Rams

Spring Lamb trade continues along good lines with today seeing 1,731 lambs sold, a 15% rise in numbers on last week, and trade up £1.23 a head on average. These numbers equate to 770 more lambs sold than the same week last year and at 28p/kg or £8.46 per head more, these figures certainly underline the strength of the live market trade at the moment and why I encourage producers to look to the live marts as their chosen medium for marketing their stock instead of other direct options.
Premium prices achieved today include Messrs Beckwith of Holme House, Gargrave topping the sale at 340.0p kg with a pair of great Continental crosses weighing 35kg making £119 each to Vivers Scotlamb who also secured 38kg Continentals at 331.6p £126 from HR&WJ Maudsley of Rathmell. M Crabtree from Kettlesing sold at 297p (42kg £125) to Andrew Atkinson, CD&RF Kitching, Threshfield made 297p (38kg £113) to Vivers Scotlamb, whilst JB&AH Coates, Cowan Bridge, Carnforth made 296p (32kg £95) to Vivers Scotlamb, whilst Brayton Farmshop purchased lambs at 295p (44kg £130) from A&AR Phillipson, Briercliffe, Burnley.
J&F Nutter, Hurst Green, Clitheroe topped the sale at £137 per head with Continentals selling to Brayton Farmshop, whilst Messrs Nutter sold further lambs at £130 to Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton, Bradford. Kendalls Farm Butchers of Harrogate & Pateley Bridge secured lambs at £128 on two occasions, first from MJ Spensley, Elslack and then from A&SJ Sugden, Laycock. JA&JM Wade & Son in Cononley topped their run at £128 with others at £127, followed at £126 twice by HR&WJ Maudsley, Rathmell.
