4050 SHEEP comprising 62 NEW SEASON LAMBS, 3510 OLD SEASON LAMBS and 478 CAST SHEEP
A much larger show of all round with 4,049 Prime & Cast sold today, and prices were well up on the week as well. First in the ring were the Spring Lambs and these set the pace for the day. When 62 head averaged 319.4p and numbers were way short of requirements form buyers. Top price was £162 on two occasions, both from JD&V Towers & Son of Farleton, purchased by D&J Isherwood and Andrew Atkinson and making to 360p/kg from D&A Livestock of Haverah Park selling to Andrew Atkinson.
A more mixed show of Old Season Lambs were a great trade, levelling at 280p/kg right through with a general shortage of the very smartest hoggs compared to usual weeks here at Skipton. What were out to sell could command prices of 340p to 400p/kg, Andrew Phillips of Burton Leonard topping the sale at 402.8p/kg. Pete Longdin of Wellingly topped the £’s per head at £172, EP&JM Hutchinson £171 £170, Andrew Phillips £170, TE Walker £170. There were some very good heavy hoggs in the Mart today, and the best way to report prices would be by saying the best heavies were £110-£115 above weight, nice sorts £100-£110 and well fleshed commercials £85-£100. Hill bred sheep saw some good runs generally around the £80-£85 over region or 250p, Best Mules to £141 from JK Wilson of Blubberhouses and £138 from Bernard Simpson of Pateley Bridge. Lightweight Horned lambs were good to sell if well fleshed and the best end were 230p to 255p, plainer sorts 210p-230p.
Cast Sheep were a very sharp trade and there was a shortage of heavy sheep so an overall average of £85 is a good return on the day.

Breeding Sheep
A large show of Store & Breeding Sheep forward for sale and quality outfits in high demand, especially younger ewes with strong lambs at foot. The 226 outfits of sheep with lambs topped at £230 for Texel Shearlings and Twins from Alan Midgley, Luddendenfoot, the same vendor with two further pens at £220. Peter Simpson of Dacre had a nice run of Texel Ewes with twins, topping at £228 and £225, with Andrew Throup of Silsden selling Texel Ewes and Twins to £225. Older ewes were decent to sell if they had older lambs at foot with purchasers discounting outfits with very young lambs. A useful entry of Store Hoggs found favour and sold away very well.

72 Calves through the door today and a good covering of buyers around the ring. £425 was the top price today for a cracking blue bull from RL Wright & Son of Airton with two more at £400 to follow that one. Better end of the continentals sold away nicely with some more 14 – 20 day old blue bulls just easing the average back to £310. A rare sight of pens of Limousin X bulls and heifers were on show today and met a nice trade for the bulls topping at £380 and £360 from JC&DJ Marshall, West End.
Heifers were definitely buyable today with straight Limousin heifers settling out from the £200 to £250 mark. Blues faired better with Moon’s topping with a tremendous heifer at £400 and £395 with John and Rob Marshall at £350 with their entry although some nice rearing types at 14- 21 days steadying the average to £280.

Craven Dairy Auction (4 head)
A small show of dairy on offer today however a good trade was had for the cattle that turned up for the sale. Robin Jennings of South Stainley took top honours with his 2nd Calver giving 44kg and only 36 months of age. The cow was well bid for and eventually went home with Mark Goodall of Tong, Bradford. The two, straight newly calven heifers on offer today from Jennings and Stapleton were certainly on the mark price wise however the trade of the day went to the incalf heifer presented by Duncan Holme, Bolton Abbey. The heifer Incalf to AA sold to John Howard of Heslaker for £1400.
