A quieter trade but all processors reporting a steady trade for manufacturing meat brought on by holidays on the continent and weather at home supressing demand. A high percentage of lean cows once again in the average.

Prime Sheep
Harder work today, as was widely expected, levelling at 188p across the whole sale. Best lambs were still a reasonable trade making 220p to 250p as a general rule, an odd couple of pens at more than this, L Simpson & Son, Westfield Farm, Pateley Bridge topping at 258p (43kg £111) to Vivers Scot Lamb, whilst the same purchasers had the next top of 252p (42kg £106) from J&R Paisley of Westmoor House Farm, Ilkley. KA&HL Fawcett, Barden made 246p, S&P Scriven Elslack 242p, CD&RF Kitching 241p, Ellis Bros 241p and D&A Livestock Haverah Park 240p. Heavier lambs were also a decent trade, as buyers looked to stick to meat, so anything 42/43kg upwards was in comparison to lighter lambs a decent trade. Brian Moorhouse Bell Busk made £119 of 57kg Texel to Swaledale Foods, with the same buyers securing 52kg at £117 from L Simpson & Son, Rob Paisley made £115 of 50kg to Countrystyle Meats Farm Shop & Restaurant Lancaster, whilst Norman Moon Malham made £115 of 54kg to Swaledale Foods. The 46-52kg weight bracket averaged 203p £96.52 and the over 52kg averaged 201p or £110.20.
A middle of the road prime lamb, well covered, weighing 42kg upwards was generally 190p to 205p, and the smart lighter lambs could match this, but anything just lacking that final finish, or a commercial type lamb 38kg to 41kg was generally in the 170’s.
The undoubted highlight of today’s sale was the donation of a prime lamb by Tony & Kay Kiernan which was sold and all the proceeds going to the “Thumbs up for Charlie” campaign, helping to raise money for a family friends son who needs Proton Beam Therapy in an effort to beat a rare brain tumour affecting him. The lamb was first sold for £460 and purchased by West Scottish Lamb of Carlisle, who re-offered the lamb for sale, at 2nd time of selling it made the same price this time to Andrew Atkinson, who again re-offered the lamb and then finally to Morgan Helliwell for £360, a total of £1280 and added to £220 of other generous donations on the day a total of £1500 was raised towards this worthy cause. A big thankyou to all involved.
